About Our universe

we have such a huge universe. why does it exist? Why did God create such a vast universe? Is it ours alone?

I often like to think that God created the Universe so we would know He’s real

God created all! He created us to Search. We won’t be boss. What we find will be friendly and unfriendly. They have more smarts than we do. The smartest will be boss. Forming a council would be nice…

St. Robert Bellarmine wrote a little book called “The Mind’s Ascent to God by a Ladder of Created Things.” The second step in the ladder is consideration of the vastness of the universe. He discusses how even at his time the universe seemed immeasurable, but that they were just beginning to learn it is even more vast than they had thought. He asks, if the vastness of the universe is so great, how much greater still is its Creator?

The vastness of the universe helps us to comprehend–even if just a little bit–the incomprehensible greatness and omnipotence of God.

I think the universe needs to be as big as it is in order for stars to form, which produce heavy elements such as carbon/oxygen. The expansion rate is also very finely tuned in order to allow the formation of life.

It most certainly is NOT ours alone. I would bet good money there’s intelligent extraterrestrial life

I have thought about this on occasion. I can see both sides; that God made this large universe and that there is intelligent extraterrestrial life out there. And I could also see that God made the universe and we are the only intelligent life in it. It would be kind of like God saying, " See I made all of this for you to enjoy because I love you."

You’re assuming that life can begin by unguided, random processes. That’s a big assumption and one that can’t be demonstrated to be true.
 
Necessity.

It’s a requirement of interplanetary gravitation and structure. Quite complex. Similar to that old statement people have heard about the butterfly flapping its wings in Mexico, causing a tornado in Europe.

The actual reality of the universe and all it’s layers is honestly mind blowing.

I’m starting to align with the more conservative scientists at NASA.

Although we once predicted veritable ‘trillions’ of potential life baring worlds, that is becoming increasing unlikely.

Assuming we view life on the level of ‘sentient’ in the realm of our own, we are continually eliminating hundreds of thousands of worlds as we go.

The volume of criteria necessary for life on Earth is much larger than we imagined. Tectonics. Atmostphere, Solar distance, speed and dozens more.

If you want to find skeptics of the design argument. You might want to look in other areas than those of my peers examining distant stars 🙂
 
But no reason to assume it can’t happen either. Besides, I never said God did not create aliens…
 
Also, i don’t know what you think about this, but some things that may not be random to God sure looks random to us and are, in fact, random to all practical effects since we cannot predict them. Just like a “random number generator” of any statistical software, the numbers are actually random, but it’s as if they were
 
Yeah, but I don’t think we can rely on what seems like God would do, since history is full of examples of reinterpreting scripture and re examining the literal intepretation to accommodate empirical facts
 
There’s very good reason to believe life doesn’t arise naturally. The sheer complexity of even the simplest cell and the fact that DNA contains information, makes it impossible for life to have arisen naturally.

Scientists have had such a hard time coming up with a workable theory for abiogenesis on earth, that they’re restored to theories of life coming from outer space. But that begs the question, how could any lifeform survive travel across space with all the gamma rays and whatnot.
 
Not sure why I am chiming in here. It never seems to change anyone’s mind. But here goes…

Just because scientists can’t explain or repeat a process doesn’t mean it’s impossible. To the question in the Original Post, my answer is that God had to make the universe pretty big and pretty old in order to ensure that life would form somewhere and develop to the point that a living thing could have the capacity to recognize and love its Creator.

I am of the opinion that the laws of nature, as God established them, are so well-designed – fine-tuned, as they say – that the emergence of life is practically guaranteed. There may be simple life on many planets. However, there are so many more improbabilities to the development of intelligent, social, loving, and wondering creatures that it may be that we are the only such species in all the vast universe.

It could be, but I don’t believe we’re alone. The thought of just seeing what they’re like brings me goosebumps
 
They could be out there, but the vastness of space and the slowness of light (on the scale of galaxies) separate them from us perhaps for all time.
 
Yeah. It’s probably for the best. It is safer for us to assume that any intelligent alien spieces out there will not have altruistic goals. Hence why I think active SETI is a bad idea
