I have a couple of ponderings and troubles about statues. The first is that I’d like to get one of Mary but I’m not sure which one - do you have any suggestions? I already have a very plain white statue of a woman praying that was my mother’s that I believe is Mary, but I don’t know for sure.

The second is a statue of Christ. This one I’m a little more hesitant about. I’m coming from a strictly iconoclastic protestant background, and have only just managed to cope with flat icons of Christ - the idea of a naturalistic statue makes me all weird. But I kind of feel it would be odd to have a statue of Mary and not one of Jesus - sort of lop-sided. Do any former protestants have any experience of this. Or does anyone have any sage advice to help me get over my foible?

Please post a picture of your white statute. Someone here can confirm whether or not it’s Mary.

Start with holy cards, a set of two, one Jesus and one Mary. Put them in a little frame.

When you’re ready, pick up a small statute of Jesus and a small statute of Mary. They don’t have to match.

When you envision Christ, do you see Him on a throne, or a park bench? Is the symbolism of him holding a lamb as the Good Shepherd important to you? Or do you choose to see Him in His glorified body? Get a statue that reflects your highest thoughts about Him.

Put the statute next to your holy cards, and build an association. When you’re more comfortable, use this little set up to start a "prayer corner"in your home.

Thanks for the advice, very helpful 🙂

This is my mother’s statue - the best picture I could get!

well yes, that’s the other thing - there are tons of beautiful statues of Mary about, but something which captures the majesty and beauty of Christ is probably way out of my price range.
