About the Divine Mercy Novena

I plan on starting the Divine Mercy Novena today. I didn’t realize that it started on Good Friday. Will I still get the graces if I go to confession on Divine Mercy Sunday?
 
I started on Good Friday, but I missed Saturday. I was wondering the same thing. If I just pray that chaplet twice today, will that count?:o

I don’t know. But, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to try.

These are Jesus’s words to St. Faustina in Notebook II (scroll about 3/4 down to read it yourself):

On one occasion, I heard these words:

My daughter, tell the whole world about My inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day are open all the divine floodgates through which graces flow. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate my love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.

If you have missed a day in the novena, or are starting late, I trust that all of your prayers to bring souls to His Merciful heart will be honored by Him, even though the novena is not complete, especially when you unite your prayer with those being offered by the communion of saints who are praying it. All prayer is heard.
 
James and Carole, thanks. You’re right, it certainly can’t hurt to pray extra, even if I missed a day! I’ll be going to adoration (I hope) on Sunday so I’ll still try to do it anyway.🙂
 
I’ll probably have to pray for three extra days, but that’s alright. Thanks for the information.
 
Sure, it’ll count. It’s called Divine MERCY. He gave us this opportunity because he wants to be merciful to us. Time and days don’t confine God. We just need to do the best we can with it. A sincere heart is what is most important.
 
I remember reading Ask an Apologist where father said that novenas aren’t magic and we don’t have to say all the right words on all the right days to get the graces as if God is some sort of vending machine (or something like that). Sure you’ll get the graces:thumbsup:
 
You can still obtain the graces from this Novena…just back up the last three days to catch up on the prayers. Novena
 
This is the one and only novena I do. I really like the Divine Mercy chaplet since it can be chanted and I enjoy singing and it is such a wondeful prayer. Just start the novena today and finish a couple days after. I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. It is not like we are only supposed to chant/say the chaplet during this time period. It can be said at any time.
 
I believe it always starts on Good Friday. But I agree with the other posters that a sincere heart is what you need for the Novena to be effective. Heck, I was concerned because I started it on Good Friday, but not at 3:00 because we had to be in church for the Passion and Veneration at 3:00. Holy Sat., I was able to make it at 3:00 but Easter Sunday I said it before Mass in the AM because I knew we would be busy with company, and eating Easter Dinner at about that time. (and I was cooking and having some family over…really busy) After kind of obsessing over this, I think it was the Holy Spirit that finally spoke to me and the thought came that the important thing to Our Lord is your heart. Didn’t worry about it after that:) …just do the best you can and pray it with love.

You’re right, my bad. I was too eager for an excuse as to why I forgot to start the novena, I guess…:o For some reason last year I had no problem remembering.

This morning I called into Relevant Radio and asked Fr. James Kubicki (of the Apostleship of Prayer) about not starting the novena on time. He said that the plenary indulgence is actually attatched to making a full confession, going to mass/communion and saying certain prayers on Divine Mercy Sunday. (I suppose that you also have to have the intent to obtain the indulgence, as usual.) Fr. Kubicki indicated that the chaplet should be prayed on DMS itself, which I’m sure is a good idea…but re: the exact specifications for the indulgence, the DMS website says:
The plenary indulgence is granted (under the usual conditions of a sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion and a prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff) to the faithful who, on Divine Mercy Sunday, in a spirit that is completely detached from the affection for a sin, even a venial sin, recite the Our Father and the Creed, and also adding a devout prayer (e.g. Merciful Jesus, I trust in you!).

FYI…i’ve been looking for an audio version of the Diary because it is too overwhelming to read.

i found on this website www.inter-missions.com a cd with a dramatic representation of many important parts of the diary.

you can listen to some of them on the site. i haven’t purchased it yet. but i thought youd like to know. God’s mercy on you!
