Thanks for your post.

If as you say the answer to my Q is “no”… then what do you use a criteria for sin?

God Bless,
Pat [PJM]
You didn’t ask if the Ten Commandments are the criteria for sin. You asked if they listed all the sins there are. That’s two very different things.

The TCs are still the criteria for sin. The Old Covenant did not negate them, but rather Christ expanded on them to include the interior life as well as the exterior life. The TCs are the moral law which is eternal. The other laws, such as the dietary laws, are disciplinary only, therefore the Church has decided we need not keep these since Christ is the fulfillment of the OT sacrifices and rites.

The Church tells us we are still to obey the TCs. The Seven Capital (Deadly) Sins are well known: vainglory (pride), avarice, gluttony, lust, sloth, envy, anger. All of them have their roots in the TCs. We form our consciences according to the TCs and do examination of conscience for confession using them, as well.

The Bible is full of things to avoid because they are wrong.

Hi Della,

Thanks for your reply.

What I’m hoping to discusss is How sin is committed and determined to b a sin. If it’s not the TC alone, then what?

The Catechism of the Catholic Church defines what is and isn’t mortal sin derived from Sacred Tradition which includes Scripture and the judgments of the Magisterium. Many sins are listed in the Bible, but their nature is defined by the Church.

So my friend, how can one know if thy have sined? And which catagory of sin is committed?

God Bless,
Pat
Well thats alot harder to define. Like for instance you could have the same sin as I. Now if we both commited that same sin, yours could be mortal, mine venial.

Mortal sin means you know its wrong, you know it will separate you from God and you do it anyway.

Like the ten that are listed are pretty cut and dry. You can’t kill, steal etc.

I can say the best way anyone could really know is by their own mind. YOU know when you are doing something wrong, and GOD knows also.

Venial is a sin that is commited not with a deliberate act to make the choice of God or yourself.

Like you gossip, you didn’t mean real harm, and you know we are taught not to. but that tongue got away from you as my Mother would say:p But you should have pushed the idle switch and you didn’t. But you never meant to do deliverate harm. Things like that.

Or maybe you said something and then thought, I should not have said that. If I could only take that one back. Thats venial. But mortal would have been you couldn’t wait to get it out and did mean harm to the other party. Things like that.

My Mom always said that tongue is sharper then a razor blade, and the phone is the devils playground for many. And now its the internet. while it can be used for good, it can be used for evil.

But the internet isn’t evil. its People who make it a wonderful or evil thing.

Mortal sin has three necessary requirements; all MUST be present for one to sin “mortally”
  1. SERIOUS MATTER
  2. Personal awareness that it is a Serious Matter, and doing it WILL result in a committed Mortal Sin.
[The test for serious matter is a bit ambiguous; but here is a guide. If you had a group of practicing Catholics, more than half would have to agree that it is a “Serious Matter.”

Catholic catechism: 1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: “Mortal sin is sin whose object is grave matter and which is also committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.”
  1. Doing it [or at least desiring to do it] if your not somehow prevented from doing so.
Like the ten that are listed are pretty cut and dry. You can’t kill, steal etc.
The Ten Commandments are TEN CATAGORIES of sin; NOT a list of “all possible sins.”

For example the 5th. Commandment: “Thou shall not kill” covers abortion, contraception, destroying someone’s good reputation, and could even extend to a lack of some charitable acts, and this is NOT a complete list.

“Honor your Father and your Mother:” includes all other members of your family who are to be treated as you’d like to be treated. As well as respect for the elderly. [again an incomplete list.]
This needs to done in examining one’s conscience for each and every category of sin.
I can say the best way anyone could really know is by their own mind. YOU know when you are doing something wrong, and GOD knows also.

Gossip can be a Mortal sin depending on the amount of harm inflicted and the intent to do harm…

And God bless you, Pat.

I would have thought, from my catechesis, that destroying someone’s reputation would more properly fall under the eighth commandment.

The 10 commandments were a great way to stratify social norms.

They established some standards of behavior, from which others have extrapolated additional standards, as mentioned in the posts preceding this one.

But I don’t believe violating any of them is a sin any more than I believe eating shellfish or wearing clothing made with two types of thread are sins.

I was thinking about this the other day. Actually every sin could be under one of the ten commandments.

You just have to figure out which one of the commands you broke with that sin. Sometimes its more then one:eek:

So I guess thats when my Dad said if you want to go to heaven all you have to do is live the ten commandments.

Friends,

God gave Moses the Ten Commandmnts …

Does this mean that there are only Ten Difffernt sins/ Ten different ways to possibly sin?
I think you can say that there are ten categories of sins you can commit, yes: false religion, disrespect of God, disobedience to Church regulations, disrespect to legitimately constituted authority, sins against the body of others, sexual sins, sins against the property of others, sins against truth, lust, and envy.

Mortal sin, venial sin, a sin is a sin. But I think it has to do with intent. If you do something like kill someone in a auto accident, your intent was not to kill that person. But if you get mad and kill someone out of hate, then its a mortal sin. IMO

So, if I understand your view correctly?

There is no Good or Evil? No Right or wrong? 1+ 1 = 2?,cold-blooded Murder is NOT wrong?

Were this actually the truth [and it certainly is NOT] God would not have bothered to give every human person[throughout all of history] a “mind, Intellect, FREEWILL and soul.” [which makes every human person different; NO TWO ever exactly alike]. These can be showen to exist BUT they canot be quantifed… Describe your freewill for me. Size, color, shape, weight…

Not possible because LIKE GOD HIMSELF, they are SPIRITAUL THINGS. These along with the fact that ONLY humanity; like God, can LOVE, prove not only that God exit, but also that he is a GOOD God.

S my friend, if your comfortable with your position, despite it’s lack of a logical or moral base; then all I can say is,

God Bless you, cause you really need it.:o

The Ten Commandments in Ex 20 is the original, pure, untarnished Mosaic Covenant. Between this giving of the Covenant and the repetition of the Commandments, a very significant event happens: the Golden Calf (Ex. 32). The Golden Calf resulted in a reworking of the priesthood (the Levitical Priesthood was instituted), and the addition of much more Law (Leviticus). The Commandments are also repeated in Deuteronomy. Why? The sacrilege at Baal-Peor, and another reworking of the Priesthood (The High Priest was instituted) and much more Law. Every time a Covenant is broken, it must be renewed, and is always followed with more regulation.

Hi PJM:

My guess is that there is only one sin. It’s the gateway sin to all other sin. It’s expressed in countless ways. The ten commandments categorizes them, but their individual manifestations would be countless. Anyway, if one were to overcome the one sin, I don’t think the others would be possible. For such a person, there is no need for ten commandments. One who achieves this is beyond the holy and the unholy.

Shouting doesn’t help, friend, so keep you caps to yourself.

Secondly, I didn’s say murder wasn’t wrong. I have no idea where you read that into my statements. Nor did I say there was no right or wrong, good of evil.

I said the 10 commandments establish acceptable standards of behavior, nothing more, nothing less.

But I don’t believe in the concept of sin because I don’t believe in the concept of damnation. Without damnation, there is no need of sin.

The rest of your comments make no sense to me. 🤷

Hello again, 🙂

Interestering thought, but not in-line with biblical teaching on sin.

**1John.1 Verses 8 to 10: **“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

1John.5 Verses 16 to 17 "If any one sees his brother committing what is not a mortal sin, he will ask, and God will give him life for those whose sin is not mortal.** There is sin which is mortal; I do not say that one is to pray for that. All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin which is not mortal. **

’Mortal" here means UNTO DEATH. Unconfessed an unrepented is an automatic ticket to hell. …PJM

John.20 Verses 20 to 23 " When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained”

God’s continued Blesing my friend,
Pat

Now I’m really curious…

What is your understanding of “justice”? And are there any “absolutes?”
