About to make my first confession

Now I’m confused because you said you were baptised Catholic this Easter. They would not have done this if you were baptised in the Church of England because that would be a valid baptism, so I must be missing something. Age 7 is considered age of reason by the way.
 
7 was younger than I’d guessed , thanks for that info . What I had as a child ( approx aged 18 months ) was the standard christening most people I know have had ( which I’ve been told but not by anyone in an official position ) counts & I haven’t been baptised by the Catholic church ( RCIA in september & will do whatever I’m told is needed from there ) . My appologies from any confusion caused by any of my earlier posts .
 
I have a question which is kind of related to the subject. I havent been to confesion in close to 20 years and I through my teenage years and early twenties sinned quite a bit, a whole lot now that I think about it. I am planning on going to confession and where it says to say the sins and the number of sins what are they looking for? Something like "I broke the 3rd commandment or something like I commited fornication or does the phrase or decription really matter?

Just a quick question not trying to hijack the post.

Scottgun, I believe it was the OP who said they were baptised Catholic at Easter.

It’s great that you are planning to go to confession. Pray to the Blessed Mother and the Holy Spirit to help you prepare and make a good, contrite confession.

You need to be a little more specific than “I broke the x commandment.” Most of the commandments cover a huge range of behavior, so it’s better to simply say what you did. So “I committed fornication” is a good way to specify your sin. You do not need to go into the whole backstory of each sin, but you do need to include any details that change the nature of the sin. For example, “I assaulted someone” is less serious than “I assaulted my father.” “I stole a gold cup” is merely theft, but it becomes sacrilege also when the gold cup is a chalice from the church.

You may also be concerned about the numbers of times you committed the sins, since it’s been many years since your last confession. You can certainly estimate, for example, “I did not attend Sunday Mass for 13 years.” Or, “I committed fornication about twice a week for 18 months.”
