Abp Chaput Quote

I am interested if this quote is authentic. A friend told me that Archbishop Charles Chaput (Denver Diocese) was quoted as saying:

“I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr”.

I hate to spread falsehoods. Can anyone corroborate this?
 
I did a couple of quick Google searches for this quote and nothing like it comes up as having been said by Archbishop Chaput.

However, in another thread on CAF another poster claims that Archbishop Chaput has said the same thing.

I don’t know what the exact truth is about the quote, so maybe somebody else can find its source. At this point I’m inclined to believe it’s apocraphyl or sorely mis-quoted.

He may very well have said it, personally, I couldn’t verify it, but maybe there’s somebody out there that is more familiar with his writings that knows where it came from.

As for the content of the quote I really hope that he and all his successors die peaceful, holy deaths in their beds and not have to suffer martyrdom.

Why don’t you email his office and ask if it’s authentic?
 
I have sent an email to the good Bishop asking if this was true. I will post again indicating either way, hopefully soon.
 
The Archbishop was very prompt in his response. He responded that the aforementioned quote was not his but that he heard from others that Cardinal Francis George may have said it. Deeper digging is required to determine to whom to attribute this quote…

I am haunted by these words as a sign of times my son may live to witness…

Very interesting – thanks for checking, thanks for posting! Time to fire off an email to the Archdiocese of Chicago. It’s awesome that Abp Chaput replied so quicky; His Eminence might be a little busier than His Excellency, though.
 
I have done some extensive googling and turned zero references to this quote. Zilch. I am beginning to think it is either a myth or a line from some movie.

Patrick Madrid discusses this in his talk ‘Why I am Catholic, When I Could Be Anything Else’…an awesome Lighthouse Catholic Media CD!!!

Bottomline is that Madrid says that he heard Archbishop Chaput quote this line that another bishop had said. He doesn’t mention the bishop that originally said it though.

It is a haunting prediction…

Very interesting…I was just given that CD by a friend but I hadn’t listened to it yet. I honestly believe those CD’s from LCM and the Marian Foundation have saved my soul. Anne Marie Schmidt’s story brought me to tears.

You’ll love Patrick Madrid’s CD…it’s one of my favorites and I’ve heard most of the LCM CDs.

You’re right…these CDs ARE saving souls. LCM & EWTN were huge in my conversion to the Church!! If someone would told me 10 years ago I’d be Catholic, I would’ve said they were nuts…now I run a Catholic pilgrimage company, coordinate EWTN Media Missionaries for the Archdiocese of Baltimore as well as promote LCM in my local parishes. The Holy Spirit sure has a great sense of humor:D
 
I listened to that CD (Patrck Madrid’s) and also heard that quote. I’m glad for those who checked it out.
 
It is quite probable that the hierarchy will be persecuted in the issue of homosexuality. The majority of the Catholics still follow the Scriptures, Anglicans and Lutherans are already divided. We shall pray for the faith of our bishops, and also for the leaders of other Christians. .
 
Fr. Richard Simon on Relevant Radio (also blogs to ‘reverend know it all’) has multiple times attributed this quote to Cardinal George. Fr. Simon is a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago, so I’d be surprised if he was quoting his own bishop inaccurately.

It may also be a paraphrase of a longer quote from Cardinal George, I can’t say I recall a radio broacast precisely enough to verify that it is a direct quote. But the meaning was starkly clear and struck me as hard as it has you guys. Cardinal George is NOT known for being a verbal bomb-chucker. Quite the opposite, actually.

The Wikipedia article on Cardinal George cites a source and quote him as follows:
