what’s really surprising is, that people who think all Christianity and all believe in God - the one and only God shown to us by Jesus Christ - would be a lie, hardly ever would frankly say what the alternatively think or believe. . . . . .
You’re talking to a (fairly observant) Jewess.

so what?
I’ve got a lot of Jewish friends. Namely the Rabbi of our neighbourhood synagogue. But - however - I am and will forever stay Christian.
Do you want to tell us we are wrong?
And if you, as you indicated, don’t believe in God at all, why then are you Jewish? They believed in God before us Christians.
Jews are our older brothers. They believed in God more than 2000 years before we Christians did. They do believe in God today. Thank’s heavens they do! Don’t call yourselve Jewish, if you don’t believe in God.

I was reading an article by Parker Palmer for my Freshman Composition class. One of the issues he talked about in this piece was the idea of absoulte truth and relative truth. He believes that since we can never know things for sure, truth is just the process by which we communicate with one another, initiate in dialouge, have conflicts, and come to a greater understanding about things…

We had a discussion on this piece in class.

I objected to most of his article by saying that there are some truths which ARE absolute, such as… God exists. There is no debating this, or questioning this. God exists whether someone believes it or not. Well… the people in my class didn’t respond to this very well… saying that the truth that God exists is not true for everyone. But I said, it IS true, whether you think it is or not.

I’m really just looking for encouragement and support in this matter, more than an all out discussion. I believe we should KNOW that God exists, outside of whatever we can prove, but that it is also essential to dwell on these truths and come to more understanding. “Faith seeking understanding” and not… understanding seeking faith. The latter seemed to be what my class was trying to argue for.

It just frustrates me, that’s all… when people can hear the truth, know it, and then reject it. People are too afraid to claim that the fact that God exists is a truth that exists for all. They are too afraid to “offend” someone. But to be lax about an essential truth is like saying… “I think killing unborn children is wrong, but I have no right to impose that view on you.” <— This is the worst ideology to plague the modern world.
I agree 100% with you and I encourage you to keep challenging ideologies, and I support you with my prayers. God bless!

Why would I want to tell you you are wrong? It hardly matters to me.

Saying (as I was doing) that the topic is all rather complicated is not saying that one does not believe, it’s saying that it’s all rather complicated.
Don’t call yourselve Jewish, if you don’t believe in God.

Don’t be so presumptuous.

If “we can never know know things for sure” -
then how can we know THAT for sure?

That “there are no absolute truths” is itself an absolutist statement, and therefore self-refutatory.
I never get tired of that one. 😃

Why would I want to tell you you are wrong? It hardly matters to me
Don’t be so presumptuous.
That’s precisely is the point. Good you mentioned it 🙂
Why on earth are people who do not believe in God, so exited about telling us; there is no God.
If I don’t believe a thing a friend feels is right, then I wouldn’t think twice about it, because, yes; IT HARDLY MATTERS TO ME. Why should I borther any further and disappoint my friend?
But nonbelievers never really act according to this very simple common sense, but remain for a lifetime in a hectic excitement of over and over again to affirm us, how senseless it is to believe in God. But why, as on the other hand you claim IT HARDLY MATTERS TO ME?
On the contrary, it matters a lot to us Christians, if our friends believes or not. And it’s not al all presumptuous, when we are most disappointed, when Jewish friends do not believe in God, for they knew thousands of years before us about Gods very true existence, and so nonbelieving Jews really can’t call themselves Jewish, if they don’t believe in God or think it’s a mere option.
When I was in Israel at a high Jewish religious holiday called sukkoth, when everybody stood up to pray at Moriah Placa, I of course stood up too to pray, as Jewish and Christians and Moslems and all others, whether they believe or not, have but one God. But then, Jewish guests, atheists, pulled my sleeve and told me to stay seated as they did, „as it is anyhow a lot of rubbish“. I was ever so disappointed and asked them WHY THEN DO YOU CALL YOURSELF JEWS AS YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN GOD. They where Israelis all right, but Jews? Never! Just as little as a Christian would be a Christian if he doesn’t believe in God. There’s nothing presumptuous about that fact.

I would ask this guy if there is no absolute truth, then how does he know what he’s saying is true? This line of thinking is just abstract philosophy meant to confuse people, b/c of course there’s an absolute truth.

If you drop a book, which way is it going? It’s not going to fly up is it? The sun went down today, so is it going to stay down? Not unless Jesus comes back tonight.

For the most part… Liberalism and it’s mentality has been a pox on humanity. It’s maturity developed movements such as:rationalism, naturalism, materialism, and to some extent, Darwinism. These things make up what we call today: The culture of death. Satan really knows his stuff! His most devious move is convincing the world that he (and God) doesn’t exist, and there’s many paths to God, and Jesus is the way to YOUR heaven and yada yada yada. Sometimes you just have to stop listening to the world, or filter out the ****, which is 99% of it’s message.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life” is what I replay in my mind when I get around worldy “critical thinkers” and it gives me strength. I would rather rely on “divine” teaching and advice than “worldly” liberal skepticism, which is constantly changing and never sure.

It’s amazing sometimes how liberal philosophy and theology can really confuse people. Just stick to your guns and keep the faith. Christ said if they persecuted him they will persecute you, but count that as a blessing. Christ is always here for us.👍

Ps. 53:1

To the choirmaster: according to Mahalath. A Maskil of David. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, doing abominable iniquity; there is none that does good.

From what I can see here… God has already pointed out that Atheists are fools. :coffeeread:

Thanks for that very true posting. Same thing I wrote in my forums for many year. But since the Christian world even has priests who deny the existence of Satan, it’s no surprise that even a lot of Christians think so. If they do, the make Jesus a liar for it was Him who over and over again pointed out the very existence of hell and the devil, and human kind knew from the beginning it’s true. Both; God as Lucifer. Any enemy’s aim is to hide and to make himself inexistent. Yes, Satan really knows his stuff! and too many help him doing so.

Does he know this for sure?

If this means does everyone believe the God of the Jews and Christians is ‘real’, the answer is of course no. Buddhists do not claim a godhead. On the other hand, Hindus claim many gods, Muslims claim the same God as Christians.

So which God are you concerned about?

I assume you are talking here about Creator God/Abba Father, with the Christ, Son of God and Man, Redeemer, and the Holy Spirit Paraclete, the triune godhead of the Christian community.

Those who are imbued with faith - or better, with pistis which means trust and abandonment - believe that the Christian God as revealed and made manifest throughout the ages, from the Ancient of Days, is Absolute, Truly Absolute, and Absolutely True - that is, a living reality. He is, however, Unknowable by virtue of his divinity.

Scientists - according to a very recent announcement The atheism debate is merely a sideshow: the main act is the transcendence of religion by David Brooks reporting in the New York Times 2008 - are increasingly convinced that there is ‘something out there’ which is inexplicable, and unknowable. They are willing to concede not only that they will never be able to fully comprehend - with inadequate human brains - the astonishing nature of the multiverse. Beyond that, they are willing to concede also that it is only possible for this multiverse to exist given the existence of an omnipotent first cause.

At the same time however, to meld theological, historical, anthropological, sociological and scientific principles will inevitably challenge our Bible which is personal and culture-bound.

Quote The debate against the atheists has been easy. The real challenge will come from people who feel the existence of the sacred, but who think that particular religions are cultural artifacts built on top of universal human traits. It’s going to come from scientists whose beliefs overlap a bit with Buddhism. Science and mysticism are joining hands and reinforcing each other. End Quote

We believe or we do not believe, and to that extent there is or is not an Absolute Truth. But all the evidence is not yet in. I believe God gave us brains to know - but we are not yet smart enough to use them for this purpose, so we must trust to faith in the interim.

Jabulani!

When People find out that I or that our friends do a lot of Christian answering in several forums, meetings and so on, they mostly are quite interested in asking questions to the Bible. The astonishing thing is; they favour questions that in fact don’t matter at all. The one and only real question would be about the real being of God; as we affirm in the Lords Prayer “THOU ART in these heavens”.
Among many absolutely unimportant inquires is the one so often repeated:
WHO WAS THE WIFE OF KAIN?!
Of course there’s no answer, even though hundreds of books are written about the theme (see also answersingenesis.org/home/area/qa.asp )

So often Jesus said; believe in God and the rest will be given to you. It’s also a gift to realise what’s important to us and what not. And; we will see the rest anyhow once we arrive at Gods kingdom, so why worry now about negligibles, before we comprehend with absolute conviction the very real existence of God.
Once we understood we additively must inquire our relation to our brothers and sisters in God; to others, for there are but two commandments: Love God and love your neighbour – such answered by Jesus in Matth 22,37-40. For exampel to exclude somebody, because we don’t like him or her so much, or simple averseness, is same murder as Kains, and diametrically contrary to the Word of God.
Oh said someone - you are kidding - excluding someone is no murder.
Well: Do you know how many suicides occure because nobody was listening to that person the person was excluded? There we are.

can anybody tell me how to open a new thread?

Thanks for this wonderful posting. Though I doubt, if the Bible is personal and culture-bound, for it can bee understood by anyone, and we too are very far away from the cultures where the Bible originated. Though we don’t understand these cultures (old Hebrew, Greece etc), we still very well understand the Bible. That’s what is so very amazing about the script.
Yes, God gave us understanding if we REALLY want to understand and in fact, it just can’t be, that we are not yet smart enough to capture the script or rather gospel. I would like to back this thought up with the fact, that Jesus Himself (and the Evangelists) thought, that it’ll be “a little while” until He comes back for the Last Judgement. And secondly; the clear and edifying language of he Holy Bible is far above our language, though to be understood by everyone, which forces to the conclusion, that we in fact a no brighter that 2000 years ago. Otherwise it wouldn’t be fact, that every day we might red a verse in the Bible that continuously gives us strength and brings sense and reason into our life. Which other book could do so?!

It’s of course clear, that we must trust to faith until we see, as nothing Jesus told us, is worldly as we’d know or are used to or would react without Gods word.

In Mail I was asked what this is supposed to mean:
or would react without Gods word.
sorry, ‘t was my queer English 😉
Here’s what it’s supposed to mean:

We, our thinking and our civilisation bases on the bible. If atheists like this idea or not. All education originated in/through/by the church. Aristocrates and later all in European influenced nations, had been taught by theologians, monks, priests etc. only. Profane teachers where common only very late in history. That’s why much of our thinking bases on God word. Common feeling, thinking and reaction would be much different without Gods word. (see “human rights” unknown even today in some countries)

There’s an answer to the question: Who was Cain’s wife? and it can be explained in a theological and scientific way…
Check it out, it’s a read: creationontheweb.com/images/pdfs/cabook/chapter8.pdf

Don’t forget: “The word of the Lord endures forever.” and “Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

God’s word is just as important then as it is now, regardless of culture or time period.👍

How true.
God however never mentioned the or a wife of Kain, who sowith is hardly subject to Gods word. So, as we never exactly will nor ever can know, I’d rather leave it to the future, when we really will see what’s fact, and stick to the real important questions or rather facts, such as GOD IS.

(thanks for the pdf-script. 👍 )

In Gen 4: 16-17 it says: " And Cain went out from the face of the Lord, and dwelt as a fugitive on the earth, at the east side of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife, and she conceived, and brought forth Henoch: and he built a city, and called the name thereof by the name of his son Henoch."

And in the footnotes (Douay-Rheims) these verses are explained as:

“His wife”… She was a daughter of Adam, and Cain’s own sister; God dispensing with such marriages in the beginning of the world, as mankind could not otherwise be propagated. He built a city, viz. In process of time, when his race was multiplied, so as to be numerous enough to people it. For in the many hundred years he lived, his race might be multiplied even to millions.👍
