Absolution before Communion?

I have Absolution BEFORE Communion deleted out of the 1962 missal. Who deleted this? And what year was it deleted? Please give accurate and truthful answers. Hearsay says Pope Pius X had something to do with this? Not sure.

As I mentioned in the earlier thread, it was in 1961 by the General Rubrics promulgated by the motu proprio Rubricarium Instructum.

In my experience of attending mass in the '50’s and '60’s there was no absolution before communion. There was a prayer after the confiteor that God would forgive us our sins but it was not an absolution although we would bless ourselves. Would you please post this prayer so we know what you are talking about.

Are you referring to the Misereatur and the Indulgentiam following the Server’s Second Confiteor? I don’t know of any another prayer before communion.

There has never been a sacramental absolution before Communion, only the Indugentiam which is a blessing (May the Lord forgive you your sins) but not an Absolution (Ego te absolvo). You would sign yourself during the Indulgentiam. This follows the servers Confiteor which you do not remember because it was said silently by the servers in a Low Mass or Missa Cantante - or sung by the sub-deacon in a Solemn High Mass.

The only time the servers Confiteor was omitted prior to 1961 was when there were no communicants (including the Altar Boys).

It is interesting that every Indult Mass I have ever assisted at using the 1962 Book has retained the Confiteor before Communion, ostensibly to ensure that your soul is free from Venial Sin prior to approaching the Blessed Sacrament. Saying a private Act of Contrition prior to receiving Communion would have the same effect.

I regret I no longer have my old St. Joseph Daily Missal but I don’t remember a confiteor immediately before communion (and my brothers were altar boys). What was the purpose of a second confiteor? What sins could they have committed since the first confiteor? Oh wait, I remember what altar boys were like.

In former times few people received Communion at mass. One sometimes had to race forward. The priest would take a quick look back, if he say no one running forward, He just went on.

In the rare event that someone did come forward, the priest used the ritual for giving communion outside of mass which included the Confiteor. Eventually it got absorbed into the mass.

Or at least that is what I have been told. By the times I am familiar with - 40’'s and 50’s - more were going to Communion, though one still had to be quick to get Communion at a Wedding or Funeral. One didn’t want to barge in on the Wedding party or the immediate family of the deceased, but if they didn’t receive one needed get the priest’s attention quickly. I didn’t notice the problem when I was an altar boy; one knelt at the top step while the priest was receiving, but had to get quick when I no longer was serving.

I always felt mass was incomplete without Communion, but my parents and grandparents would only receive if they had been to Confession within 24 hours.

My understanding the 2nd Confiteor is there “in case” people are present to receive Holy Communion . . .which we are when we are at Mass. My missal has them both in it.
