Hi all,

I went to confession this past Saturday, and after confessing my sins, all the priest said was “I absolve you.”

On the way home, I thought that he forgot half of what he needed - the “in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” I went to another church, and I told the priest I don’t think that I got absolved correctly, so I was going to do a do-over.

I mean I can understand if he started reciting “God, father of merices …” and forgot a word and I didn’t catch it.

Two questions:

Am I completely off base that the first absolution wasn’t valid since the full formula wasn’t given?

Does my penance form that first “confession” stick?

My understanding is that the minimum words are “I absolve you of your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” If I went to confession and all the priest said was “I absolve you,” I would assume that it wasn’t sufficient and would ask him to say the whole prayer of absolution.

If you went to confession again following that I would do the penance given by the second priest.

I think you have to take into consideration if the priest wasn’t feeling well or that his intention was for the absolution of the pentitant.

Paul

sounds like some research is needed before I jump to conclusions. Checking what canon law says.
