Today I went to confession and I was surprised not to hear the typical formula of absolution but the Priest just said ‘I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit…’

Is this valid? I would think so since he said I absolve you…etc.

Perhaps he was saying the rest quietly while i said my act of contrition?
This has happened before, but I could hear that Priest uttering the words quietly that time, I couldnt this time.

the ‘I absolve you from/of your sins in the Name of the Father…’ et cetera is the important part and this must be said for the sacrament to be valid.

The rest is unimportant but should be done anyway.

It was valid but nonethelss illicit for him to change the words of the prayer.

he probably said ‘OF your sins’ but I typed it up wrong. Sorry!
