Absolution?

If you go to confession and the priest basically counsels you and acknowledges your regret for the sin and gives you advice on how to pray for graces to over come it but never does the absolution prayer, have you recieved absolution? Is it sacramental confession if the priest is just wearing a t-shirt?

I felt really weird about my confession today and want to make sure that it was valid. AND are there channels to report abuses to bishops?

In emegency, it can be supposed that a priest might dispense with proper attire, i.e. T-shirt, but to omit the prayer of absolution sounds like a question for the bishop. Off the top of my head, it would seem that you have met the requirement of intention(somewhat like a Perfect Act of Contrition) and you could move on, but mention the lack of absolution when you go to confession the next time.

If I didn’t hear the prayer of absolution, I would assume that I hadn’t received it. I’d probably ask the priest right then what the problem is if he didn’t say it.

Can. 960 Individual and integral confession and absolution constitute the only ordinary means by which a member of the faithful conscious of grave sin is reconciled with God and the Church.

So i guess the answer is no, i did not recieve absolution. I did receive Eucharist right afterward. Does that constitute sacrilege?

I doubt it, since you weren’t sure about this issue. Don’t loose sleep over this. Just go to confession again asap and tell the priest that you didn’t receive absolution during your last confession, and ask him how this should be handled.

Frankly I don’t care what the priest wears and I don’t think it really matters. What matters to me is that he hears my confession and absolves me. If he didn’t say the words I absolve you…then I would say its not a valid confession.

What he wears doesn’t make or break absolution. To me it shows more of the attitude of the priest. considering it is a holy sacrament of the church and the priest is standing in persona christi, if possible i feel he should put on a stole and act in a very holy manner. I believe that counseling should take place in a seperate setting.

But all in all it isn’t a big deal, i just experienced my first unorthodox priest i guess.

Don’t get me wrong. I agree with you that the priest should be properly attired. Its just that when I’m going to Confession what he will be wearing in not on my mind so if he happens to be wearing a tee shirt it doesn’t bother me.
