youre using your body to express affection that is sexulaity even if it’s with your relatives or children.
What? No, being affectionate with your children is not sexual. Hugging your grandma is not sexual.

To answer your question, abstaining from sex does not have to mean no kissing, cuddling, or sleeping with your spouse unless one or the other of you really cannot handle it. In fact I would be really bothered if my husband had such a lack of control that he couldn’t even be near me like that.

the catechism says “sexuality affects all aspects of the person in the unity of his body and soul” when i hug my grandma my sexuality is involved. it’s a bodily expression of my inner feelings.

She is kind of right. Everything we do in relation to the opposite SEX is sexual–even in reference to our kids or parents. But that doesn’t make it unhealthy or immoral or yucky. Our sexuality is rooted in our maleness and femaleness–not just who we want to have intercourse with. For example, daughters really need a lot of physical affection from their fathers, but not so much from their mothers. That is good, holy, ordered affection. When they don’t get that, they can often turn to guys for disordered, unholy, and evil affection. See how it is all related? It is rooted, as I said, in her femaleness, in her sexuality.

Which is why, by the way, the Church rejects transgendered ideology. You cannot be a girl and yet have male anatomy. That is, literally, a dis-integration of his sexuality.

Bingo.

I think this is a personal decision that is between you, your husband and God.

Abstaining is difficult. My husband and I have tried to abstain…with somewhat mixed results that have ended up with both of us going to confession and me winding up pregnant at a time we were hoping to wait.

My husband and I know what is considered too far for us. I think it’s different for every single couple and every single marriage.

I think it would be too difficult and I would be going too far into details with our intimacy to describe what constitutes as “too far” for us.

I can say that I believe we can kiss each other, sleep in the same bed, cuddle on the couch while watching TV, give each other back rubs…as long as the intentions are just to connect and maintain a baseline of physical intimacy that we crave as a married couple.

I know my love language is physical touch from my husband. If I didn’t recieve any physical affection due to fear of taking it too far…we wouldn’t be feeding our marriage.
thank you for sharing, helpful information.

I am not sure that this is what the OP means by “sexuality”. She says that when she (a female) hugs her grandma, that is somehow an “expression” of sexuality. I understand that someone’s sexual identity is not simply understood in relation to who we are attracted to, but the OP seems a little misguided about sexuality and how one can be affectionate without it being “sexual”.

i understand that you can touch your husband without intending to have sex. this sexuality tangent started bc one poster very pretentiously said sexuality and affection are not related. i am saying they are. my sexuality my femaleness comes across in everything i do with my body. affection is bodily expression of my strong emotions even when i touch a stranger on the arm, i am expressing my feelings to them via my sexuality.

bingo my behind. i’m part italian and hispanic, my sexuality is in everything i do. you guys dont get what i’m saying maybe youre robots…
Oh honey, I’m a mutt and I understand the difference between affection and sexual. When my little four year old cousin crawls into my lap and kisses me, that is affection. It doesn’t get my juices flowing and it shouldn’t. If hubby comes home and grabs me by the waist, pulls me in, and gives me a passionate kiss; it is ON. That was totally sexual.
Cuddling on the couch is fine for me and hubby. Cuddling on the couch and kissing on my neck and touching me in a sexual way is going to lead to sex, same with hubby.
I have to have physical contact to feel love. Be it with my parents, siblings, or my husband. Showing someone affection shouldn’t always make you aroused or lead to thoughts of sexual things. It doesn’t make me a robot to know and feel the difference and I’m bipolar. Mania makes me want tons of sex.

i think it’s like poster kelfa said, abstaining is hard. i know how to be chaste when i’m alone, i know how being chaste feels and when im touching someone chastely. it just seems hard, as she said, to keep it that way with husband. maybe for me, in order to keep it chaste i would have to sleep in another bed . i dont know. but thank you for your (name removed by moderator)ut.

i didnt say showing affection always makes anyone aroused. i’m arguing about sematics and i still think you don’t get it, but meh i’m tired. good day.

It’s certainly not sinful for married couples to do any of those things; however, if those things tend to make it very hard for you to resist “what can come next,” and you are determined to abstain, it may not be prudent.

It varies by couple and by situation.
thank you.

I think every couple is different, and if it turns out that when you’re married you need to sleep in a different bed to keep yourself comfortable, then that’s what you do. Not because it’s wrong to sleep together, but because it’s a distraction and you need sleep. You and your husband will figure out what things to avoid and what things are okay. If you find that it’s hard, you may have to be more careful than some. Your level of self-control can also be a good gauge as to how much you actually really need to practice NFP, too. If you really cannot become pregnant for good reasons, it’s a lot easier to avoid. If your reasons aren’t so important, it can be more difficult.

God made us so he knows what happens when certain buttons are pressed! We are meant to be attracted to the opposite sex (most of the time!). Touching intimately doesnt always have to lead to intercourse! Restraint is the word.

We need love. Hugs and kisses and touching is all good i say as long as its with the right person! 😃

I’ll add that this isn’t something you’ll need to think much about until you are married. Like marriage generally, this is an area where you’ll have to learn through experience. It isn’t necessarily easy, but not much of what happens in marriage is. If you communicate well and you focus on chastity, respect, and fidelity to the teachings of the Church, you’ll grow a lot through it. Until then, though, I wouldn’t spend much time worrying about it.

Always good to know the rules/facts etc so never too early!

Sometimes though, because of massive breakdowns in relationships, lack of love, hugs, kisses etc etc can lead to Adultery as my dear sister can attest to. Ok, one should stick to the teachings of the church, i agree, but not everyone can be a saint. Not everyone has the willpower to beat the devil!! Not everyone can be strong and resist temptations.

Prayer is the answer

it’s considered a sin if i kiss or cuddle my boyfriend bc we’re not married and that is intimate contact.
This is not in accord with Catholic teaching- it is not that black and white - prudence is required. It appears to be a personal perspective only.

Talk about sarcastic

No I am not a robot. I enjoy my my husband’s company very much.
ok, first of all why the nasty sarcastic tone? your answer was the most clear cut answer. i was replying to pianistclare’s ridiculous claim that affection and sexuality are not related and i’m pretty positive that it is from priests and catholic media where i have heard the general line “our sexuality is good because through our bodies we express love to our families” etc
Sorry, when I hug my son, there isn’t anything sexual about it. When I kissed my mother on her cheek, no sexuality there, either. Mothering isn’t sexual.

Not all affection and touch leads to sexual intimacy.
It doesn’t. And if it does for you, then you do need to re-think what you believe.
It’s not a ridiculous notion.
You provided a quote that proves my point, btw.

I’m Hispanic as well. I don’t go after every person I touch. THAT is ridiculous. My sexual drive does not govern me. When an adult, one learns to master these things.
