If I am in a state of sin and not able to make it to confession before mass, during communion is it acceptable for me to go up, but instead of receiving, make a sign of the cross when I reach the front and pass by?

Most parishes allow people to come up for a blessing (If not receiving). In this case they cross there chest in an X shape with their arms. After the blessing you can make a sign of the cross.

Just stay in your seat and ask for a spiritual communion.

I believe you can receive communion in such a circumstance if you intend to go to confession as soon as you can afterwards. But, if you don’t think you should, then don’t, of course.

Going up and asking for a blessing during communion our paster has banned. So check beforehand. Same thing with making a sign once you get up front, in my home parish that could mess up the line, the priest and the alter boy with his paten since every one is expecting this to be communion. Are you going up so you don’t look odd sitting, and wondering what people think of you?

No you can’t - you shouldn’t receive communion with unconfessed mortal sin on your soul except in case of extreme emergencyI believe you can receive communion in such a circumstance if you intend to go to confession as soon as you can afterwards. But, if you don’t think you should, then don’t, of course.

This may be construed as something rude, though your intentions seem to be OK. However, I do see more and more where people go up just to receive the priest’s blessing with their heads bowed at the communion rail. At least in the Tridentine Rite.

Only if it will be many months before you will get the opportunity to receive Holy Communion again.I believe you can receive communion in such a circumstance if you intend to go to confession as soon as you can afterwards. But, if you don’t think you should, then don’t, of course.

It is a recent thing to receive the Eucharist all the time. In days of yore, people may have only taken Communion during Easter.

our priest said we could come up but to keep our hands to our chest not open for receiving. this was done quite a few times but that was his rule not neccessarily the churches.

Yes, which is one of the reasons why the Council of Trent encouraged spiritual communion. Most perhaps felt not worthy to receive or were afraid of being the only communicants in the congregation. Times definitely have changed where almost everyone feels worthy to receive, regardless of the state of their soul.

perhaps it is acceptable, but why do it at all? you will simply confuse the ministers and make a gesture which could equally be done as you remain kneeling joinging in prayer with the rest of the congregation. Sadly, in some parishes your gesture may even be misconstrued as a protest of some kinds.

You cannot receive Communion while in a state of mortal sin even if you make an act of perfect contrition. Confession is still required before receiving.I believe you can receive communion in such a circumstance if you intend to go to confession as soon as you can afterwards.
