Abstaining from social media and blogging is probly the one thing most of us can do that will be radically life-changing. It is for me, when I do it, if I can do it.

Singer Lady Gaga recently said, “Social media is the toilet of the internet.” Enough said.

Abstaining from social media for me would just mean that I don’t get to follow my prayer group, don’t get to talk at all with pretty much all my friends, and don’t get to wish people condolences on deaths or congratulations on their birthday, wedding, or when they adopt a new kitten.

I don’t think the good Lord will mind too much if I continue to use it during Lent, given that it’s one of the only friendly interactions I have left.

Sorry for all the people who find it to be a distraction and a toilet. I always think they just need to pick better friends and pages to follow. Muting now before 20 people tell me I’m mortally sinning by not giving it up.

I think it’s more for people like me who don’t use it for prayers but somehow get hooked on Labor and Delivery stories on youtube for too long when I could be doing better things with my time, like prayer. It does hook you and I don’t like the feeling myself of have my wasted time which I would never feel if I were praying or even cleaning my house.

I agree. This is why I’m giving up socials for Lent. I’m not as disciplined as Bear. I waste a lot of time mindlessly scrolling on my phone. So much time in fact that I’m not sure how I will manage this Lenten fast. I’m really nervous about being able to live up to this commitment.

This sounds like a great idea. Normally, I spend too much time watching or listening to news and educational videos on YouTube. And reading forum threads.

I think, other than watching things with my wife, I may abstain from social media as well. I should use the time to pray, read the Bible, and get started learning a needed language (German, Finnish, or Arabic?).

Thank you. I was looking for something for Lent.

And some might say that the entertainment industry is the underground sewer system of the world.

So there is that. 😉

Provided you keep your toilet bowl flushed and clean, it ain’t so bad.

Have you ever worked on or taken apart drain and sewer pipes?

World News sub forum…where?
Hold on…I think there is a lot going on here on CAF that I wasn’t aware of. I didn’t realize that those sub forums are active. Ever since the big change a couple years ago, I always just see the main front page of the forum. Whenever I’d click on a sub forum I’d see no posts, so I assumed they were all disabled and abandoned. But now, with a little more clicking…I see a whole lot more opportunities to avoid.

Long ago I muted the World News and Catholic News forums, and it has made CAF a much more positive experience for me.

Yes I’m done with the world news forum. Went cold turkey by not even clicking on it already and for Lent and for good. I’m surprised it’s even here. Another site I belong to did away with that type of forum for several reasons. 1) people who got along on the main forum ended up disliking one another by arguing all the time on the news forum. 2) all the attention was directed at that forum (this wouldn’t be much of a problem here because there are so many members and threads). 3) many had no interest in discussing the main topic of the forum and only posted on the news forum to stir up trouble and push an agenda.

Lately it seems the Social Justice forum is getting a bit political, but even so, there is enough good that I’ll stick with it.

I don’t do much social media, so I guess I’ll have to cut down on coffee and between-meal snacks for Lent.
