Hi, all!

I choose to abstain from meat on Fridays throughout the entire liturgical year. However, this Friday is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Now, I am aware that solemnities dispense us from penances, but for some reason I feel that I should still abstain from meat this Friday. I would appreciate helpful suggestions on whether I should continue with my regular abstinence, or, should I pay homage to the solemnity and eat meat.

Thanks!

If you don’t want to eat meat for any reason, or no reason at all, there isn’t any requirement that you have to.

Some people eat the same meals in the same rotation every week. I can see where moving away from your traditional Friday fish might be disconcerting.

i’m not sure what you want us to suggest?
The post was updated just for you! 🙂

It’s up to you, but performing penance this Friday seems, to me, contrary to the joyful, celebratory spirit of the solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. Consider this… for the rest of Advent we “abstain” from singing the Gloria…but this Friday we’ll be singing it.

Thank you! That’s just what I needed to read! @twf

You have your answer but I’ll just add this:

You are not obligated to eat meat on a solemnity just as you are not obligated to eat meat on Sunday.

But you can and should treat the day as if it is something special and worthy of celebration rather than of penance. So maybe you should pick your favorite food and have that. It doesn’t matter if your favorite is meat, fish, or vegetable.
