Look here, is cheese pizza ok on Fridays? (i.e. Papa John’s.) Anything in the tomato sauce? Cheese ok?

Cheese and tomato sauce are perfectly a-okay in following the Church’s guidelines for abstinence during Lent. Abstinence means refraining from eating meat and meat products, not dairy.

“Abstinence The law of abstinence requires a Catholic 14 years of age until death to abstain from eating meat on Fridays in honor of the Passion of Jesus on Good Friday. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Moral theologians have traditionally considered this also to forbid soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted, as are animal derived products such as margarine and gelatin which do not have any meat taste.” Source: ewtn.com/faith/lent/fast.htm

Why wouldn’t pizza be OK, unless you are abstaining from pizza. Usually places use a meatless sauce on pizza. I would think it’s OK. But if you have doubts ask them what’s in the sauce. Why wouldn’t cheese be OK unless you are abstaining from dairy products; also you could add veggies.

I wasn’t sure about the cheese. I think I was confused by the fact some vegetarians also refrain from dairy products, and since they didn’t eat meat, I kinda lumped it in the bag.

You’re in good shape. I think the Orthodox do or did include oil and milk in their fast, but it is not part of the Latin Rite abstinence requirements.

Mmm… pizza…

Yeah, but I bet y’all didn’t know a tomato was a fruit NOT a vegetable.

Y’all are just in good mood because South Alabama managed to hire OUR football coach.
