friend of mine went in The Baptist forum because he lied and said he was a Baptist

He may not have lied, just being economical with the truth.

There is also the case that he was taken for being a Baptist.

I used to live next door to a Methodist Chapel. After Mass, every Sunday, at the Church where I am Sacristan, I went home, had a cup of coffee then nipped next door for the Methodist Service. I was a regular attender. Living next door, I also cut their grass and looked after the garden.

When they got a new Minister, I was introduced as ‘the good Methodist who lived next door’. That was very embarrassing as the new Minister had already met me, through our local ‘Churches together movement’ which was [and still is] very active. He knew I was the Catholic Sacristan and altar server.

We became good friends. We often laughed about it after. He was a saintly man. Now passed away, I am sure he is numbered among the Saints.

By the way, I love to sing at Mass. It was all those years in the Methodist tradition where I discovered my voice. Pity not more Catholics don’t do likewise.

Methodist Ministers do some fantastic homilies. Always remember one old boy, a lay preacher, he said [in a broad Norfolk accent] ‘The Bible starts with a tale O a garden and finishes with a city O gold’! Never forgot that.

IMO, Saying you are “Christian” instead of “Catholic” for the express purpose of being allowed somewhere Catholics are not welcome is Deceitful. Yes, **Catholics are Christians **BUT the point of claiming it was obviously to decieve. I would say it was a sin of ommission and was against one of the ten commandments… thall shalt not lie.

As for the intended end of defending Catholics everywhere. How would you like it, If I pretended to be Catholic and went to a Catholic PArish or a Catholic only place and quietly started stirring up confusion by telling them what I believe is true? It’s one thing to go somewhere wher you are welcome and openly tell them who you are and what you believe from the start, it’s another to sneak in and pretend you agree so that you can disagree in a sneaky fashion.

When in Rome, do as the Romans do. I first went to the Methodist Chapel as a Christian because that is what I am.

When working with colleagues of other faiths [e.g. Moslems], I am proud of being a Christian *. But if someone tells me they are Moslem, that is all I need to know. If they start talking about Sunni, or shi-ite, I become confused by the ideosyncracies between them. It is enough to know they are Moslem and I am Christian.

As for ‘not being welcome’. You could not be further from the truth. Who says Catholics are not welcome at a Methodist Church?

When the Minister died, the Methodist Congretation elected our Catholic Deacon to be their new Minister. He was more than happy to act as caretaker for a year until they were able to obtain a new Minister but due to his Catholic commitment, including hospital chaplain, RAF chaplain [he holds the rank of Sqn Ldr] and mission to seamen, he was not able to take the job on a permanent basis.

I do not know where you live but where I live, Methodists, Anglicans and Catholics get on very well. We do a lot together in the main churches. I lived in a small village away from the main centre. In ‘our’ Methodist chapel, there were Anglicans, Methodists and other Christians, myself included. They made the assumption I was Methodist because I was such a regular attender and I worked so hard to keep the garden nice, which was my pleasure to do.

The post is to show our non-Catholic friends what the average Catholic encounters everyday in real life. Our existence is not confined to this or any other forum. The message I am trying to convey is if a Catholic responds to you in an unchartiable way to try to turn the other cheek as he may have had an encounter with some of those anti-Catholic fellows. The post is definitely not an excuse for any Catholic to respond in kind to such an attack from anti-Catholics. It is simply a reality check as to what goes on in the real world involving Catholics. We should always be Christian in our discussions and I always hold my fellow Catholics to a higher standard. Peace and Love

But does that really happen to us in real life? It doesn’t happen to me. In real life most people don’t give a hoot which Church I attend.

Oh…yes…it does! As said by others, it depends where you live. I’ve heard much worse things face-to-face than I’ve heard online. Adults are a little better, but when I was in school it seemed to be a right of passage for the youth at several churches to practice “Catholic baiting” at every opportunity. And on the other hand, all my closest friends are non-Catholic, proving that the vocal minority of idiots gets most of the attention and the good guys are out there if you don’t let the idiots take up too much of your time.

The thing that bothers me about it is that people who really don’t know anything about Catholocism can get wrong info from people who don’t really know, and in my area of the world, they might not ever meet a Catholic to set them straight.
