Victims of sexual abuse by priests Tuesday demanded Pope Benedict take concrete steps to discipline clerics who have molested children, saying a public apology they expect this week from the pope will not be enough. Skip related content
The U.S.-based Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP) said the pope was expected to use a June 9-11 meeting of the world’s priests at the Vatican to issue an apology over a widening sex abuse scandal that has rocked the Catholic Church.
But the group said any apology was meaningless unless the pontiff also set a “zero-tolerance policy” for paedophile priests or church officials involved in any cover-up and turned over files on abuse cases to the authorities.
“We’re going to hear a lot about forgiveness, but we want to talk about justice,” Peter Isely, a SNAP leader who said he had been abused by a priest, told a news conference near the Vatican. The group held up pictures of Church officials and displayed childhood photos of abuse victims.
The 83-year-old German pontiff, facing the worst crisis of his five-year papacy, has said the Church has to seek forgiveness from abuse victims and has promised it will do all it can to probe accusations and bring culprits to justice.
But SNAP said more children risked assault by priests unless the pope acted now.
“This isn’t a problem of the past,” said Barbara Dorris, another group leader. “Children around the world are being abused right now.”

Hasn’t the Pope already issued a zero tolerance policy?

More lies by the media.

Sexual abuse of children has always been forbidden by the Church.

Removal from ministry of priests was never dependent upon anyone in Rome. Any local bishop could/can summarily remove any of his diocesan priests from active ministry for any or no reason, based solely on his judgement. The only thing the Vatican can do is laicize a priest, i.e., release him from his vow of celibacy. And that would protect nobody. He will still be a priest forever, and be judged by Christ accordingly.

To imply anything else is either gross negligence and unbelievably poor journalism, or an outright lie.

What the bigoted, anti-Catholic media would LOVE to do is in any way implicate child abuse to this Pope (or, actually, any Pope). They refuse to understand, or feign ignorance, over how the Church operates. They refuse to understand that the bishop is in direct control over his priests.

Where’s their proof that “children around the world are being abused right now”? Of course, as we speak, children around the world ARE being abused-by relatives, teachers, coaches, scout leaders, strangers, and, yes, even priests. It’s the nature of human sinfulness to hurt others, and no amount of “justice” or “zero tolerance” (which the Catholic Church has already implemented!) will stop child abuse 100%. I would really like to know what exactly SNAP REALLY wants?

In Christ,

Ellen

Yes, and many corrective measures have been taken. These actions do not sell advertising so we do not hear of them nearly as much.

Truly just punishment for these actions can only be administered by civil authorities whenever any person is found guilty of a sexual crime. I will not judge those in SNAP, but we do live in a country of law where accusations do not equate to guilt.

Oh, that’s an easy question. SNAP wants to crucify the Church like the Pharisees crucified Christ. Nothing less than a bloodletting will do.

That was my first thought as well. Any priest who is credibly accused of abuse has his priestly faculties suspended immediately and is removed from ministry. I think every diocese in the U.S. has policies clearly laid out, most of which involve reporting allegations to the police immediately.

I read somewhere recently that there have been a very small number of abuse cases that have actually taken place in the last 10 years. The Catholic Church is probably the safest place for children right now.

Ellen,

We all know what they want, payback, vengance, revenge, $$$$$$…

**Jesus taught us;

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” (LK 6:37)

Pray for all those abused!**

**Pray for our priests, who are only men who have tried to serve God & others, despite failing at times!

Let’s do everything we can to protect innocent victims, but let’s also focus on the vast majority of priests (90+%) who never abuse & who serve with selfless love!!!**

Well, since they’re already getting $$$$$ and the abusive priests are being brought to justice (if they’re still alive), and the zero tolerance policy and screenings are in place, the only other thing I can think of is that they want to completely eliminate the priesthood. At first I thought they, like all the “progressives” wanted married and female priests. But, since married men and women also abuse children, that won’t really satisfy them. So, I think they want the priesthood gone altogether (which of course would mean no Sacraments, so, in effect, no Church). So, I’m sure that just removing priests who’ve had “credible” accusations against them isn’t enough. They want ANY accusation, no matter how unlikely and baseless, to suffice.

Well, Ellen, you’re correct. Because if we don’t have the priesthood, we don’t have 5 of the Sacraments, including the Holy Eucharist. And without the Eucharist, we’re done. Guess who’s behind all this (as usual)? Satan, of course. And the children of the Enlightenment are his minions, willing to carry out his bidding as best they can.

Good news, though, is that we know the ending to all this. We win, because God wins. 🙂

The question, though, is how much suffering will the Church have to go through before we win? The blood of martyrs has always been the fertilizer of faith. 🙂

That’s what I thought. Statistically, a child is safer with a Catholic Priest than with a school teacher, or even with a family member.

The Church is doing all it can NOW to help the victims, millions is being spent on trying to help them, and we have the zero tolerance policy, What other organization has that?

Exactly. So what are these people talking about. A zero tolerance policy has already been put in place, and it is going in to Churches all around the World. The only place I saw that reported was on RomeReports, a Catholic news service, I saw that reported no where else.

How can they honestly say that all the Pope has done is administer an apology? He’s done more than any other Pope has done to combat sex abuse.
  • Issue a zero tolerance policy worldwide.
  • A fast path to defrock Priests guilty of abuse.
  • Temporarily suspending Priests who under investigation.
  • Reporting cases to law enforcement will be mandatory along with handing over any documents need for the investigation.
  • But unlike civil law, the Church does not have statue of limitations, so Priests guilty of abuse can be punished even after many years have gone by since they committed the crimes.
  • Seminarians will face a more rigorous screening process will include psychological tests on there affectivity and human maturity.
  • Those who cover up cases or don’t implement the rules in a timely manner, they will be held accountable.
The new rules will be an addition to the ones that are already in place to fight sex abuse.

I think we should pray for them, but I don’t understand why they are going around saying the Pope hasn’t instituted a zero tolarance policy when he has.

1.) If “the only thing the Vatican can do is laicize a priest, i.e., release him from his vow of celibacy. And that would protect nobody”, then why does the Pope go around apologizing everywhere? Someone should atert him so he can say: “the only thing the Vatican can do is laicize a priest, i.e., release him from his vow of celibacy. And that would protect nobody”.

2.) We know that the Bishops have taken two or three BILLION dollars and paid it out in settlements. That’s because, obviously, some Priests have abused children and some Bishops covered it up, or worst, shuffled abuser Priests off to new duties elsewhere, where the abusive activities were continued.

So now the abuser Priests are dead or removed, and that is good. But what about all the Bishops that were doing the shuffling? How many resigned their power positions and removed themselves to a monestary in the Aleutian islands for remedial prayer? Or did such large settlements get paid out, so that they could keep their positions. I don’t know. What are the actual numbers on the Bishops who lost their positions? We know the numbers on the dollars that they paid out.

3.) What is the actual number of abuse cases in the last ten years? Is it nearly zero? Answer that and it may give us some idea if zero tolerance is a real solution or if the problem is homosexual priests being admited to the Priesthood and throwing a bump up in the “child abuse” numbers.

4.) All the Priest’s that I have known, have been good guy’s. I would think that all the innocent Priests would be glad to know that the ones that have caused the trouble have been dealt with justly. Common sense.

Oh, that’s an easy question. SNAP wants to crucify the Church like the Pharisees crucified Christ. Nothing less than a bloodletting will do.
The motivation is obvious this is just another campaign in the war between the culture of death and the culture of life.Satan attacked our priests and like all sinners some succumbed. We are held to a different standard and have become the media’s whipping boy. This will go on and on.It is up to individual Catholics to tell the Truth about the measures that have been taken.SPEAK UP!to your family, friends, neighbours, letters to the editor, etc.Remember Christ said" if you deny ME(or remain silent)I will deny you to the Father"
