Does anyone know of any abuses by protestants as a group? Not individuals like Jimmy Swaggart or Jim Baker, but something (on a smaller scale, I’m sure) like the Inquisition?
Thanks.

Thanks,
Were Catholics specifically targeted by the Nazis as were the Jewish people?
Maximillian Kolbe and John Paul the Great, were they pursued because of their Catholicism, and was Hitler a claimant of any Christian faith?

Well, King Henry VIII of England imprisoned and executed scores if not hundreds of lay people and religious who refused to accept his attempts to assume headship of the Church in England. He also executed many who refused to renounce their allegiance to the Pope (in essence their Catholicism). The most famous victims were probably his Chancellors, Cardinal Wolsey and Sir Thomas More, and Bishop Fisher.

There were also many orders of monks and nuns who had their abbeys, monasteries and convents disbanded, many were literally demolished totally or partially and their property and valuables taken over by the King.

Under his daughter, Elizabeth I, there were also great restrictions placed on the ability of Catholics to practice their faith in England and imprisonments and executions of prominent Catholics, including St Edmund Campion. In fairness, many of Elizabeth’s actions seem to have been inspired by plots against her throne, and even her life, which were supported by Popes Pius V and Gregory XIII.

These imperial restrictions carried over into Ireland which was part of the “british empire” at the time. The potato famine in Ireland was thought to be influenced by the division between the protestant monarchy versus the catholic tenant farmers in Ireland by historians. There would not have been the loss of live from the famine if the population of Ireland had been of the protestant faith. It’s been widely accepted that the population of the island of Ireland decreased by 4 million people due to immigration and some starvation a direct result of the famine and restrictions on practicing the Faith.

Hitler may in public have claimed to be doing the will of God, but records of his private conversations show otherwise. Many of these were recorded by his secretary and published in a book called Hitler’s Table Talk (Adolf Hitler, London, Weidenfeld & Nicholson, 1953). I have lifted the text of these from the soc.religion.christian newsgroup’s Hitler FAQ.
Night of 11th-12th July, 1941
"National Socialism and religion cannot exist together…
"The heaviest blow that ever struck humanity was the coming of Christianity. Bolshevism is Christianity’s illegitimate child. Both are inventions of the Jew. The deliberate lie in the matter of religion was introduced into the world by Christianity…
“Let it not be said that Christianity brought man the life of the soul, for that evolution was in the natural order of things.” (p 6 & 7)
10th October, 1941, midday
“Christianity is a rebellion against natural law, a protest against nature. Taken to its logical extreme, Christianity would mean the systematic cultivation of the human failure.” (p 43)
14th October, 1941, midday
"The best thing is to let Christianity die a natural death… When understanding of the universe has become widespread… Christian doctrine will be convicted of absurdity…
"Christianity has reached the peak of absurdity… And that’s why someday its structure will collapse…
"…the only way to get rid of Christianity is to allow it to die little by little…
"Christianity the liar…
“We’ll see to it that the Churches cannot spread abroad teachings in conflict with the interests of the State.” (p 49-52)
19th October, 1941, night
“The reason why the ancient world was so pure, light and serene was that it knew nothing of the two great scourges: the pox and Christianity.”
21st October, 1941, midday
"Originally, Christianity was merely an incarnation of Bolshevism, the destroyer…
"The decisive falsification of Jesus’ doctrine was the work of St.Paul. He gave himself to this work… for the purposes of personal exploitation…
“Didn’t the world see, carried on right into the Middle Ages, the same old system of martyrs, tortures, faggots? Of old, it was in the name of Christianity. Today, it’s in the name of Bolshevism. Yesterday the
instigator was Saul: the instigator today, Mardochai. Saul was changed into St.Paul, and Mardochai into Karl Marx. By exterminating this pest, we shall do humanity a service of which our soldiers can have no idea.” (p 63-65)
13th December, 1941, midnight
"Christianity is an invention of sick brains: one could imagine nothing more senseless, nor any more indecent way of turning the idea of the Godhead into a mockery… …
“When all is said, we have no reason to wish that the Italians and Spaniards should free themselves from the drug of Christianity. Let’s be the only people who are immunised against the disease.” (p 118-119)
14th December, 1941, midday
"Kerrl, with noblest of intentions, wanted to attempt a synthesis between National Socialism and Christianity. I don’t believe the thing’s possible, and I see the obstacle in Christianity itself…
“Pure Christianity-- the Christianity of the catacombs-- is concerned with translating Christian doctrine into facts. It leads quite simply to the annihilation of mankind. It is merely whole-hearted Bolshevism,
under a tinsel of metaphysics.” (p 119 & 120)
9th April, 1942, dinner
“There is something very unhealthy about Christianity.” (p 339)
27th February, 1942, midday
“It would always be disagreeable for me to go down to posterity as a man who made concessions in this field. I realize that man, in his imperfection, can commit innumerable errors-- but to devote myself deliberately to errors, that is something I cannot do. I shall never come personally to terms with the Christian lie.”
“Our epoch in the next 200 years will certainly see the end of the disease of Christianity… My regret will have been that I couldn’t… behold .” (p 278)

In order to defend against these quotes one would have to depend on white racists for their so-called pro-christian quotes. Read the link to get a fuller picture of hitler.

Yes, the Nazis targeted Catholic religious. In Dachau there was a barracks that specifically housed Catholic priests. It was even called the priest barracks.

But the Nazis were not Protestant in any useful sense of the world. They were pre-Christian pagans if anything.

I seem to remember in another thread that in Mexico and/or South America the protestants - Masons did not allow Catholics to practice their faith for possibly decades during the
20th century. I may have this a little bit wrong.

During the birth of America Catholics were discriminated against as well. I know of one Catholic orphanage that was burned down as a result of a riot against Catholics. Catholics were not allowed to hold public office, children were taught to play anti-Catholic games such as “Break the Pope’s neck,” and an effigy of the pope was carried around and burned on Guy Fawke’s Day. Children were also taught to hate Catholics by such means as the Horn Book - a little book that children learned lessons from - which had in it’s teaching of the ABC’s: A: Abhor the abhorrent whore of Rome.

Don’t forget about the Klan in the U.S. in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s. Many, many stories about those bigots. Most of the stories would make you sick to here.

I’m not so much looking for abuse of Catholics as much as abuse by protestants, although that abuse by protestants can be of Catholics. As you can tell, perhaps, I’m trying to point out that abuse is not exclusiive to the Catholic Church.
Thanks, and I’m sure the rest of it will come in handy later on.

Can someone add to the fact that Protestants had their own inquisitions…

Oliver Cromwell was a tyrant against Catholics in three different nations! (England, Ireland, and Scotland).

Have you ever heard of the soupers? During the Famine, some Protestants doled out soup only to Protestants and to Catholics who converted. Those who converted, and their descendants, became known as ‘soupers’ for their infidelity.

Irish history pretty much is a history of abuses of Catholics by Protestants and Protestants by Catholics.

It started with the theft of Irish lords’ lands by English lords during Elizabeth I’s reign, on the basis that Catholics’ loyalty could not be trusted. It continued with the subsequent invasion of Ireland under Sidney, and its accompanying violence, to be followed by Cromwell’s bloody massacres the following century, and then the Penal Laws, legal restrictions which took away the right to own land, to vote, to hold any public position (e.g., being town crier or postman), to own horses or cattle of any value, etc. Start in the Reformation section here, and just keep reading until you get sick. 😦

The Catholic responses were no more humane. 😦

And then for some mostly Protestant on Protestant intolerance, check out early American history and the Puritans. Among other conflicts, there was a lot of real angst about people who believed in works vs. those who believe in faith.

The witchcraft trials while probably mostly about economics may also have had something to do with religious ideologies.
