With all the discussions around liturgical abuses etc. I’d like to get people’s comment on this train of thought.

I reckon a massive problem in the Church, post Vatican2/general 60’s revolution, is the abuse by omission, by the priests and bishops.

Sure, they aren’t preaching “pro-abortion”, or pro-contraception, or pro-“forget about the presence of Blessed Sacrament”.

But heck, are they preaching pro-life, pro-openess to life, etc? Are they reprimanding irreverence? Are they leading by example?

Holy Trinity Parish in Westmont IL has answered the call.
 
We currently drive past three masses (two in our own town, another in the next town over) to attend a TLM.

At the churches we don’t attend, you certainly can hear “pro-life” sermons, though they primarily tend to focus on the death penalty (against) rather than abortion. I’ve never heard a sermon on the sins of artificial birth control. I’d certainly say that there is a strong belief in the Real Presence in the Eucharist. I’ve heard plenty of sermons on that.

My opinion, though, is that the problem is not what is preached, but what is done.

All the priests at these three parishes take a lot of liberties with the liturgy. One deliberately changes words in the prayers to be inclusive.

Parishioners notice this, and it sends a subtle message - a negative one, in my view. I think it sows the seeds for dissent in other areas of Catholic life. When even your priest can’t “follow the rules” in the most basic area of Catholic life - the liturgy - then fellow Catholics pick up on that. So you will find daily communicants who totally believe in the Real Presence but also accept that using condoms is not sinful.

This may not be your experience, but it has been mine.
