Abusing a rosary?

So this may be a dumb question:

My cat can be a jerk when I walk by. I grabbed my rosary bag and my cat bit me as I walked by. I got angry and threw the rosary bag at him. Not in an abusive fashion as I wasn’t trying to hurt him, but startle him for some payback. Anyways, did I sin by throwing a rosary bag with a rosary in it?

Considering that we spiritually face this reality ever day, perhaps we can use this experience to prepare for our individual fights. Even if they’re with cats.

codefro~ I am not in a position to say whether you sinned or not, as that is for the Lord , but I personally feel bad even if I drop my Rosary on the floor or knock the cross. I may though, be a little scrupulous. I dont know.

A blessed rosary is a sacramental and is therefore to be treated with respect. The rosary is a prayer device that allows us, through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, to become closer to God. It is not a sacrament which allows us to directly encounter God and imparts grace through the matter or elements. However, we treat sacramentals as holy objects and thus we shouldn’t be throwing them around. Was what you did a sin? I don’t know your deepest intentions and really only God knows that. But in the future I would refrain from throwing a sacramental at my cat or at anything for that matter. I would probably pray the rosary for the virtue of patience and leave it at that… God bless… teachccd

would this be the sin of sacrilege? And how much respect should we give sacramentals, that is, what is the proportionate amount of respect we should give to sacramentals?

Forgive the piggy-back questions but they are relevant to the thread and sometimes, I feel like I could be going borderline idol worship with my practices viz. sacramentals.

also, is it bad to put other objects on top of sacramentals or even pictures of saints or Jesus?

The next time your cat engages in inappropriate behavior, a light squirt with a water bottle will send him the message that he needs to stop. Much more effective (and humane) than throwing things at him. Just make sure to keep water out of his ears, and don’t hose him down - just a mist will communicate effectively.

And your cat wasn’t being a jerk - he was being a dominate cat.

Much more effective (and humane) than throwing things at him. Just make sure to keep water out of his ears, and don’t hose him down - just a mist will communicate effectively.

Of this I am fully aware; however, to let comments about throwing objects at animals, intentionally or not, stand uncommented on does our pets a disservice.

As other posters have said, blessed objects must be accorded respect. Since your actions were knee-jerk rather than planned I doubt it was sinful, but if you’re concerned you could always ask your priest.

If you find yourself overly concerned about sinning, not just about this instance but in general, this website might offer some insight and solace:

Thank you for the resource, I do appreciate that. That is helpful.

I absolutely love my cat and he has converted me to being a cat person So I can understand someone being concerned if they thought I was trying to hurt my cat.

On the other hand, yes anyone can respond in unexpected ways and they certainly have the right, just like I have the right to point out if it is irrelavent to the topic at hand.

But not, presumably, a water bottle filled with holy water.

Though I did read a short story once in which a kid was scolded by his parents for filling his water pistol with holy water, but then later used said water pistol to defeat a demon who was going to destroy the world. . . . a rather dumb story in some ways, but fun.

You know the Catholic parish and the elementary school down there on Balboa blvd? I used to live across from the Elementary school.

I was at 13XX Balboa.

Parking was absolute hell when school was letting out, and the Methodist(?) church didn’t even say thank you when I gave them my TV. Shoulda given it to the Catholic parish, but I wasn’t Catholic then.
