Hi all. I am new to posting on these forums, but am excited to be able to chat and fellowship with other Catholics.

Anyway, I was wondering if there is a list of circumstances that are acceptable if a person is unable to attend Mass on Sunday. My area just got hit with a big snowstorm and as of right now the roads are iced over. So far, the only acceptable circumstance I know where it’s okay for a person to miss Mass on Sunday is because of serious illness…

Is inclement weather also an acceptable circumstance to miss Mass on a Sunday? Thanks!

I’m not an expert by any means, but I was told in my parish that you can miss Mass because of a snowstorm. We were supposed to get like a ton of snow (Louisville, KY area) this weekend, so everyone was scared about driving, and we were told it was ok to miss Mass if that happened. Luckily, we didn’t get that kind of snow and all is good (well, except my son wrecked his new car last night because of the little bit we got-he’s ok though), but I made it to Mass ok.

That’s what I figured too, in particular because my parish is located in a more rural section of the city I live in. Do you know where there might be a list or older thread of acceptable circumstances?

It would be impossible to make an exhaustive list of good reasons.

Obviously serious illness, so it follows that tending to someone with a serious illness is a good reason. But even if you had just a mild cold, so you really want to spread it to the rest of the parish?

If it is literally unsafe, as you have described, than that is probably a good reason. All circumstances are unique. Would you have to walk ten miles or walk a block

A fireman isn’t expected to abandon a fire to go to Mass. If your car breaks down, you are not expected to abandon it in the middle of the highway to run to Church.

God is not overly legalistic. If we seriously examine are conscience, we know what constitutes a good reason.
