How do you know when to simply “accept” the situation you are in, like a job or life situation, because that’s where God “wants” you to be versus going out and trying for something new, something more exciting, something better, etc.
How do you distinguish between,Well, this is where God wants me to be for now versus I need something better?

You may never learn exactly what God’s will is in this life. The idea, as I see it, is to know what you want, take steps to gain that position, and pray. If the situation doesn’t work out as you had hoped and prayed, then thank God that He let you know His will. He surely has something else in mind for you. Try not to be angry and resentful that God didn’t answer your prayer as you’d petitioned. He has good reasons for His actions.

I personally wouldn’t “settle?” if I was not happy where I am at. I think we all strive to better ourselves in our jobs, and keep looking for better jobs when we feel stagnant at our present one. The same for life situations.

I personally don’t think that God would keep us in a situation without letting us know that it is right for us, or that what we want instead is obtainable. If you’re not happy in your job, for whatever reason, I don’t see why you can’t look for another one. Believe me, if God wants you to remain where you are, you will. If you are unhappy in your life situation, and have tried to fix whatever is wrong about it, and need a change, I don’t think it’s God keeping you in a stagnant unhappy situation. It’s up to you to make the most out of the life that God gifted you with, whether you work with what you have or get the ball rolling to move on to something else.

Have you tried going to a Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, praying before the Blessed Sacrament, and asking Jesus what He wants you to do? Then listen for His answer.

:blessyou:

St. Ignatius in his Spiritual Exercises provides a good model for discernment and decision-making with things like this.

God doesn’t usually put up the proverbial “neon sign” telling a person exactly what to do. That being said, there are exceptions, the one that comes to my mind most readily is Mother Angelica. In her bio by Raymond Arroyo there are several examples of how she was led, and how God provided what was needed. She would be so calm when a big bill was due with no money and everybody else was all worried about it, then they would get a check for the exact amount. Amazing courage and trust and faith.

Some things that can go into a discernment are - how practical is it, how big of a risk (and how much risk are you comfortable with, as that varies from one person to another). What other people in your life might be affected and are they on board with it. What will the potential gain be, vs. where you currently are. How can you imagine it being 20 years down the road if you do it, vs. if you don’t.

And in these particular times, are the economy and globalization going to come into play. In a way, though, since things many thought were secure proved not to be, it’s not simple there either.

Some people get more out of doing things like making pros and cons lists, others prefer to be more intuitive. You might look at some past decisions and their outcomes, too. Hindsight can be a great tool.

I feel kind of strange giving advice about this because I generally feel I’ve made quite a few stupid or ill-informed decisions in my life. I’ve got a good store of mistakes to have learned from! :o But I suppose I’ve done a few things right along the way too. And I hope to increase that percentage in the years to come.

Pray, talk to people, reflect, gather info, pray some more . . .

  1. Are you happy about your day when you wake up?
  2. Will you not have to violate a commandment to go to work.
keep looking until those two meet.

This is a difficult question. What I do is stay in prayer and meditation and look for signs. Meditation, scripture or a holy book such as a spiritual work will sometimes point to a verse or situation that jumps off the page because it directly speaks to you in your situation. Also, I listen to what people say who are christians and I mean things they say that maybe aren’t necessarily intended to give advice. God speaks to us through others. For example, if several people say the same thing, it’s probably true and God is speaking to you. There are also signs such as a break in your work situation. If it looks good, it may be but then there is discernment that must be used to make sure that what you are seeing is something to act on or a sign to stay where you are. When you are suffering because of something in your life, God will act in different ways. He may allow you to stay in a painful situation for awhile and, through discernment, you will see the reason. Sometimes it’s for our spiritual growth. Hope this helps.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

I pray and then I try to do something. If nothing happens, I accept its God’s will.

Example, I pray for a new job. Pray for a long time, at the same time keep sending out resumes like crazy. No responses, not even 1 interview. Then I think about it and accept that maybe God wants me to stay a little while longer in my present job.

God works through you. You will feel it if God moves you. You can also move yourself, pray to God what you are going to do while submitting yourself to His will. God will guide you to His will, whether through positive action or inaction (like in my example, no calls for interview).

This is such a great question and this is something I am going through and really don’t have anyone to go to and that’s a problem.
I am in such a difficult situation that seems to get a bit worse, but at the same time the reason for the change I made has been profound. I’ll explain. Back in 2009 after many loses and my husband leaving, this is when I answered God’s call and went back to the catholic church and have never looked back. Well after year May 2010 I needed to make a change in my life. My life was stagnate, still couldn’t find a job and had been living in house that I grew up in and lived in when I married. My spiritual life was blossoming, though I knew I needed a change but I didn’t know what it was. I took a vacation by myself for the first time. I was scared but I knew I had to do it to begin to heal plus I wanted very much to immerse myself more into my religion and my relationship with God. So off I went and for the first time I started to journal. Well, my experience on my vacation was profound. I loved it. This place had such beauty and peacefulness to it I felt so drawn into it. The presence of God was here and I knew this was the place for me to immerse myself into his presence. I’m not a risk taker at all. I talked to everyone I knew, even my parish. Not one person was negative. The encouragement was overwhelming. I prayed about too. I got my answer and I went to this beautiful place of peace and harmony…so I thought. I can honestly say my spiritual life has grown in leaps and bounds. I have felt the presence of God and his love many times. I see his creation in everything around me. My prayer goes deep and have developed a personal relationship with Holy Trinity. It has brought me such joy, but a joy of grace. On the other hand everything else in my life is out of control. No job, my son recently turned on me and I have no idea why. It is horrible. I cannot explain this. He lives in my house and pay very little rent. He was engaged but his girlfriend broke up with him and he was devastated. He tells me it’s my fault his relationship ended, but that’s not true at all. He won’t even let me back into my own home. He has broken all ties off with me and has not paid me rent, which made my financial situation horrible. He left me know choice but to evict him from my home and now I am being evicted. The car I was driving was in his name do to my financial situation and he took it away from me. No car, no job, no friends here. I had to rent a car and have no idea how I will pay for it when I have to give it back at the end of the month. I had a small stroke shortly before Thanksgiving. I’ve had a few before. I’m ok…but should not work. I was just approved for disability, which I am so grateful for but won’t start receiving that until Feb.
I’m not shy at all. It’s easy for me to talk to people, but for some reason I can’t seem to open up here at all. I want to go back home, but I can’t right now. I have wanted to go back home for awhile but every time I tried to go back home something good would keep me here. But I feel know I really want to go, but I have to wait until my son leaves. I pray for him everyday and even have asked for his soul for his mortal sins. I go to church daily and I know God is here with me. I trust him completely, which gives me comfort. My life in the last 2 years has turned upside down inside out. I sometimes feel that I paying for someone else’s sins. I see my ex getting on with his life and I can’t go forward, but he left me for another woman and don’t understand why is it easy for him when he committed a mortal sins. Yup it makes me a bit angry to see this as I struggle every day. Life was so much easier. The American dream and then it all collapsed under me. I know someday i will understand this and maybe I understand it now. Maybe this was the only way for me to say yes to God and maybe the closer I get to God the more evil wants to attack. I know he can’t get to me but it seems he can get to people I love…
I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has an opinion on this.
There is one thing that I do know is that my relationship with God will never be diminished and will only grow throughout my life not matter how difficult life becomes.
Thank you for taking the time to listen.

PEACE
