What do the Baptists believe about accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and what is the Catholic view on this?
Catholics agree with this completely, but believe it entails a faith working through love and obedience, ***which some denominations limit to an intellectual assent of faith only./***QUOTE]
That is not true at all. As a Protestant I have never met any non-catholic Christian who believes what you just wrote. Your statement implies that we don’t care about works at all. You make it sound like it’s no big deal for us just as long as we say the words. That’s a horrible misconception. Faith for us is not a punch-line. It happens to be real to us, and works play a major role in our faith. We don’t sweep them under the rug and justify things with a mental assent.
That is not technically correct. We as catholics recognize Christ as our Lord and Savior, but it borders on heretical to state that He is our PERSONAL Lord and Savior. Christ died to give the opportunity for salvific grace to all who join in the communion of His Body, the church… He did NOT die simply for targeted individuals while ignoring the plight of others.Catholics agree with this completely, but believe it entails a faith working through love and obedience, which some denominations limit to an intellectual assent of faith only.
Baptists belive that in accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, one is saved. And in that, no matter what one does (ie: commits mass murder) s/he is saved and going to Heaven. What do the Baptists believe about accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and what is the Catholic view on this?![]()
Its one time in the way that one gets married ONE-time. You do not need a new marriage ceremony every day you are married in order to remain married. The day you are “born again” is a day you make a Commitment to let God lead your life forevermore (not mere intellectual assent). Much like a Wedding is the day you make the commitment to be married until death do you part.Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Non-Catholics believe accepting Christ as a personal savior is a *one time *profession of faith based on mere intellectual accent to the truths of the Gospel. Opposed to the Catholic position which is Accepting Christ as Savior is a life-time of taking up ones Cross to follow Him and reject satan and the world.
St. Paul “work out your salvation with fear and trembling.”
I say it is hard to be Christian. “we shall also reign with Him if we suffer with Him.”Its one time in the way that one gets married ONE-time. This does not mean that those commitments take no effort or work on our part, marriage is hard. and It can also be hard to be a Christian.
'tis true.I say it is hard to be Christian. “we shall also reign with Him if we suffer with Him.”
this is a good anology but notice how hard spouses work on their marriage. They don’t just get married and now its “lolli pops and sunny days.” So while they make a commitment to fidelity, it takes continual work to keep that commitment. Its one time in the way that one gets married ONE-time. Jesus isn’t mine, personally, as if He could be owned like a car or a mobile phone - He’s not “my personal Saviour” in the sense of “my personal car” (as opposed to the family vehicle) - but I certainly have a strong relationship with Him in my prayer life, in my day to day work, and in the Sacraments of the Church. What do the Baptists believe about accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior and what is the Catholic view on this?![]()
Couldn’t have said it better myself.Jesus isn’t mine, personally, as if He could be owned like a car or a mobile phone - He’s not “my personal Saviour” in the sense of “my personal car” (as opposed to the family vehicle) - but I certainly have a strong relationship with Him in my prayer life, in my day to day work, and in the Sacraments of the Church.![]()
I was sure to qualify it as some denominations. And there are indeed some who believe you can live however you want as long as you acknowledge Jesus as the Savior. If you are not one of those kinds, then I say God bless you! That is not true at all. As a Protestant I have never met any non-catholic Christian who believes what you just wrote. It may be a semantic issue, because certainly Jesus is not my savior to the detriment of someone else. But there are Church documents, like ones on Scripture, for example, that speak of Jesus speaking to us intimately when we read Scripture. It is an intimate encounter. So it is really both and all encompassing. I am not aware of any document that would contradict this, are you? That is not technically correct. We as catholics recognize Christ as our Lord and Savior, but it borders on heretical to state that He is our PERSONAL Lord and Savior.
That is certainly the predominant view among Baptists, in our country at least, but it is by no means the only one. Freewill Baptists and even some Southern Baptists I know believe that you can lose your salvation.Baptists belive that in accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, one is saved. And in that, no matter what one does (ie: commits mass murder) s/he is saved and going to Heaven.
Since these denominations you speak of are referred too so much here on CAF can you list just one or two of them so I can study their beliefs? You see its not only the Catholics I like to debate withI was sure to qualify it as some denominations. Some people may believe it is hard to be a Christian.I say it is hard to be Christian. “we shall also reign with Him if we suffer with Him.”
Some pedigree of Baptists apparently. I had heard it before and did a quick web search, and you will see folks defending the “it doesn’t matter how you live” angle. exampleSince these denominations you speak of are referred too so much here on CAF can you list just one or two of them so I can study their beliefs? You see its not only the Catholics I like to debate with, But try as I might I have not been able to turn up any denomination claiming that and I have been looking. I remember once running across a website about a group that believed that but it claimed they are now extinct.
