Another thing, last I knew Catholic Churches weren’t the only ones to enjoy tax exempt status, right?

So along with all the pressure to have Catholic Churches selling everything, I presume JA’s denomination is going to give us the example by doing the same thing, right?

Maybe they have! More power to them! Father John Corapi pays his taxes because he doesn’t want to be bound by Federal restrictions on freedom of speech. (How’s THAT for irony?)

An admirable view, and I agree 80% – but the tax exempt status churches enjoy relates to their charitable works, and reflects the $$ we save the State. Now: come up with a plan that will protect the charitable effort without a gag order, and I’ll sign on the dotted line.

Does your parish operate under the exemption?
i think so.

… And by the way, the art can’t be sold. It belongs to you and me. (And wouldn’t get much on the open market anyway - it’s valuable because it belongs to the Church. Once the Church no longer owns it, it’s no longer even interesting.)

I wouldn’t mind having the Pietà . I saw it when I was in Rome. One word: Awesome! it brings tears to a real christians eyes to see the sorrow on the Blessed Mother’s face as she holds her only son’s body! SIGH. But, I don’t have anyplace to put it anyway. I do have a 12 inch high copy that shows that I do accept Jesus as My Personal Lord and Savior! 👍 **

I never said the Church was greedy or it should be shut down. If you don’t know what I’m talking about then that’s good. :coffeeread:
**Hi Ron, 👋 **

**Why would you say it is good that people didn’t understand what you are talking about? Just wondering? 🤷 **

Do you think the way the Catholic church raised money before the Prostentant Reformation by Tetzel who was entrusted by the Holy See with the proclamation of indulgences in which the money was used to build the church in Rome should be returned since it was raised on a false premise?
** JA4, Honey, the word is “Protestant”

I asked a couple of others. We lost our copy of the list of who donated. Do you have a list of the people?I know there wasn’t a money back guarantee, I don’t think we started that until the 1700s, but I could be wrong there. Anyway, If they are still alive, I for one, say yea lets give them back their money! (we will just keep the interest! 😃 )
Hey, JA4, Isn’t Tetzel the name of the guy you said is raising funds for your new religion? Or,Sigh, did I misunderstand you again? 😊

and re reading your sentence, if that is what it was. It seems that you want to know** “Do you think the way the Catholic church raised money before the Prostentant Reformation … should be returned since it was raised on a false premise?” **That really doesn’t makes sense at all! I don’t mean to pick but I really don’t understand your sentence structure at all, and some of the others are starting to talk. Can I recommend AA? They really do care and so do I. It is just a suggestion, remember you are loved! :flowers: I am here for you if you need to talk. You can trust me I won’t let the others know!

God Bless **

Yes. Integrity is more important than money. The church must always have the highest integrity and should not allow itself to be stifled by tax exempt laws if it must speak out.
ja4, this is way off topic. If you want to complain about corrupt behavior of Catholics, or tax laws, start a new thread. 🤷

For those who don’t know about it, it is part of the Church’s past that is best left in the past and I don’t want to be accused of dragging the Church down and being anti-Catholic but I was talking about the Vatican banking scandal.

I have worked with ex-convicts.and other criminals. I have been a councelor for teens and adults. The first thing we tell them is to be “honest”.
Do not be ashamed of what you did, do not deny it, do not hide it. Honesty is the best policy. people can not harm you if you admit you errors. I sins God forgives us why shouldn’t other humans?
Many have been taught to said I did this or that. What does that do? It takes the “power” of it being able to be used against the person. “Yea, I did that!” is a powerful tool in healing. If you admit errors they can not be constantly brought up against you. When our Church errs The best and only policy shoule be complete and accurate justice and realignment. The worst part about the sex scandles I feel is the "church attempting to cover it up. Pope Benedict XVI, accepting Jesus as His personal Lord and Savior (OP:D ) accepted responsibility for the Church and offered apologies to the victoms. How cool is that?

If that was done 500 years ago we would not have this cancer which ate away at our church. Our Church will not say from the Holy Spirit. People err, the Holy Catholic Church can not err.

Much that us used against us is made worse by the feeble attempts to “lessen the damage”. God will forgive the individuals, The HS will protect the Church from error. So we should admit and move on when we do have scandals. Being the largest organization on earth there would be more scandals if the Holy Spirit wasn’t assisting us sinful humans as Jesus said would occur!

Let’s keep to the OP!

God Bless

I know this is off the topic but I have to ask anyway. When the Church has the truth and makes laws to be followed by all its members but does not hold itself to the same standard, isn’t the Church erring when it does that?

HOW does “The Church” not hold itself to the ‘same standard’? Be specifc now. In order for “The Church” not to ‘hold itself to the same standard’ you’d have to have the Pope speaking ex cathedra to his hierarchy telling them that while the ‘grunts’ had to obey X rules, the hierarchy was free to disobey those same rules. You’re not saying this has happened, are you?

“The Church” does not err, but people who are members of her do. Anytime that persons in the Apostolic Succession fail to hold to the standards proscribed by Christ reform is necessary. We can see an example of this in Acts, where Peter makes an infallible proclamation at the Council in Jerusalem about the relationship if Gentiles to the Law of Moses. After that, he goes to Antioch and behaves hypocritically, not holding himself to the same Standard of the Teachings of the Church. Paul admonishes him, as should be done.

Both Paul, and Peter, accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Saviour. Neither were perfect people. People’s lack of perfection does not change the perfection of the holy bride of Christ.

Great question, but we are off topic. Shall we declare the thread 'completed"?

History speaks for itself. I’m saying it definitely was done but not with the open approval of the hierarchy. Things have happened that were allowed to go on for decades.

Then history can document itself and you can provide it.

As another poster said, even if several members of the hirerarchy personally flouted the teachings of the Church, that does not make “The Church” holding itself to a separate standard.

Suppose that you belonged to a society where you were supposed to vote in every election. This was the whole purpose of the society, the “Get out the Vote” society. You are a registered member, you pay your dues.

Suppose that you decide you’re not going to vote in an election. Suppose several of your fellow members do the same. Even suppose all the members decided not to do it (while never changing the society bylaws). . .

Does that mean the society itself plays by 'different rules"? No. The society, in the bylaws, has a rule. The society maintains the rule unless the rule is authentically and authoritatively ‘rewritten’ and that rule becomes the ‘new rule.’ Members of the society might disregard the rule but that doesn’t CHANGE the rule ITSELF.

So if you’re going to say that in history, individual members of the Church broke rules. . .fine. We’ll agree. individuals did. “THE CHURCH”, however, did not. The teachings never changed even if individuals chose to defy them.

I apologize if this has gone off topic. . .and I’ll later on start another thread so it doesn’t continue off topic here. . .but there is nothing that saddens me more than seeing vague, nebulous ‘claims’ made about how ‘somebody’ or ‘something’ did X,Y, or Z. . .and then when you try to get specifics about ‘where’s the proof’ suddenly you either keep getting more of the ‘history says’ (still without proof) or you do get a specific, you are able to demonstrate the specific is not a legitimate example, and yet it still gets brought up as a claim, over and over. It’s not that it makes me personally angry or that I feel any animus against particular posters; it’s simply frustration that somehow there is a blockage of communication such that people just can’t seem to hear or see or understand the truth. I know there are lots of different reasons why this can happen but it is a great sorrow to me as this lack of communication/listening is one of the greatest obstacles to Christian unity.

How about language as the obstacle to unity and the processing and interpretation of ideas? On one thread I said someday the Church will cease to exist when its job is complete and I was told the Church will never cease to exist because the Church is the people not the institution. Here you are telling me the opposite. You say the Church is the institution and not the people.
