I got a Windows 8 tablet for Christmas and am really excited about it. However, in the Windows Store (the exclusive seller of apps) terms and conditions say that you must be eighteen to use it (which I’m about a year and a half shy of). I struggle with scrupulosity and have talked to a parent and my pastor, who think that there is no problem here, but I can’t help feeling guilty that whenever I install or use an app I’m basically lying about my age and breaking the law.

Is this a sin? What should I do?

Due to your scrupulosity issues, you should listen to your priest and not bring things of this nature to the internet.

I dont see any sin. Really, I dont.

Especially when they want you to sit there and read an hours worth of Terms and Conditions only to install a simple app.

I will go on a limb and say ALL people click “I have Read and Accept the Terms and Conditions” box without reading them, including your age.

Now I am not saying do what everyone else is doing, I am saying that when simple things like these arise, there is no need for worry or scrupulosity about it.

Due to your nature of scrupulosity, I would advise you to listen to your parents and priest and not dwell upon the issue.

To be completely honest, I do not see any sin.

Since when does any business determine the morality of using their product? As for any legal problems of you not being “of age” as per their instructions, how are they to know, and even if they did, what can they do about it? Can they send armed goons to your house in the middle of the night to confiscate your Windows 8 tablet??? Get real, I think not at least not in the USA!
Bear in mind the lawyers working for windows and msn who write that nonsense, are the same corrupt people that tolerate pornography on the internet and profit from it.
Listen to your priest about this.

I agree with this. However, I also think that obeying the rules set out by the company for this situation is a good idea. Although it may be a slight inconvenience, I believe that it is good to practice honesty in this situation. 🙂

Have your parents pay for the apps from the app store, that would meet the terms and conditions

The terms do allow for that, so long as the parents’ account it used. They can’t buy apps for my account. It’s weird, though, that they let me make an account, even when I listed my age as under eighteen.

  1. Listen to your pastor and parents.
  2. Ask the Windows Store. They will have a FAQ or an e-mail address for enquiries. Explain that you have an account and are under 18. What are you expected to do?
