Accidently receiving Holy Communion

Considering that sick people don’t even have to be conscious or awake in order to receive the graces of the Eucharist,

And considering that Byzantine Rite babies can receive the graces of the Eucharist,

There’s no question that the OP’s son received all the graces one would normally receive at Communion. That’s what we call “sacramental grace”: Grace received by the valid and fruitful reception of a Sacrament.

Now, it’s true that if somebody is improperly disposed to receive, that can restrict his receptiveness to grace, or the effects of the graces can be “held back” until he goes to Confession. But the kid was being obedient to an adult and not doing anything sinful or scornful against the Church. So there’s no reason to believe those graces would not have come into full effect.

Obviously it would be better to come fully prepared and with all things properly done, because that’s a fuller experience and allows the kid to respond more fully to God. The effect of grace is increased by full consent and knowledge. But the sacramental grace of Communion is so infinite anyway, that it’s like comparing one ocean to two oceans. Either way, it’s more water than I could ever swim across!

So we have to trust that God will make this work for the good of the OP’s son, and bring comfort to his parents. Also, it will hopefully be a wakeup call for that clueless adult who should have known better, and maybe for the whole parish.

This is not a big deal and no confession is required.
Please have patience with your friend as she is trying to do well.

Good luck to your son in his faith journey.
Try not to worry about this, not important in the long run.

Peace
-Father Dan

It happens all the time - even with the parents present. If at a funeral where there are non-Catholics present and the priest does not give instruction before Communion, many people accidentally receive Communion. They are not sinning and they are not receiving the effects of Communion.
I saw this happen just a couple of weeks ago. We had a baptism at my (Eastern) parish and a 6-year-old boy received for the first time. The mom just reassured him that it would be fine and congratulated him on his First Communion.
