Hello.
My situation: I have not gone to mass in several weeks. My wife is disabled and finds it hard to sit and stay that long, our masses are usually 60-70 minutes long. Also my son has bee diagnosed with ADHD. Its hard for him to not make a nuisance at church. I am wondering what is allowed to be brought to mass for
  1. to make my wife more comfortable
  2. keeping my child busy so he won’t cause a problem.
If anyone can help or offer advice I will be very thankful.

60-70 minutes?!!! Oh, my.

Is there another Sunday Mass offered at your parish that is shorter? At our parish, the “traditional” Mass (not the Latin–I’m referring to the Mass with a full choir and lots of chants and a huuuuuuge crowd of parishioners) lasts over an hour, but the 6:30 A.M. Mass has no music, less parishioners, and usually lasts around a half hour.

If you’re sick, or having to care for the sick, as you clearly are, you’re dispensed from having to go to Mass.

This doesn’t make missing Mass any less a cause for personal sorrow.

In the mean time, could you arrange for Communion calls for your family?

And as far as making special accomodations for the needs of your wife and child, simply ask the pastor. I’m sure that he will be delighted to work with you.

I don’t know what your wife requires but there is no reason you couldn’t sit at the back so that she can stand up if sitting becomes too difficult. Bringing a cushion or something else to be more comfortable is also an option.

For your son, whatever he requires that is not noisy.
