I don’t know what all the different philosophies say about this; but would have thought that the intellect as part of the human brain is basically corporeal.

There’s a wide variety of schools but I think they can all be put under three main headings: the substance dualists say mind and matter are different kinds of substance; the property dualists say all substance is the same kind but mind has properties different in kind from matter; and the monists say mind and matter are of the same kind, with the idealists saying mind is the basis of reality, while physicalists say the physical world is.
Many posters on CAF seem to go for one of the dualist schools and give the impression all philosophers do too, while only horrid scientists are physicalists, but I’d reckon most modern philosophers can squarely be put in the physicalist camp.

Please cite your sources. There may be a higher percentage of physicalists in Europe - and possibly the US - but I doubt whether it is true of the rest of the world…

Not sure what the different philosophies say about this, but I say that all intellect is God given. Not a drop of innate wit in us. Hard to believe, but true.

If you mean the impression that most modern philosophers are physicalists, look at any summary of current work, for instance the wikipedia article on philosophy of mind (which in turn cites sources such as the Oxford Companion to Philosophy), the article at Stanford on consciousness (also interesting is animal consciousness), and so forth.

Hang on there partner, how do you expect me to get statistics, does Gallop do worldwide polls of philosophers or something?
As for modern Eastern philosophers, Buddhists might say even their ancient philosophers were more at home with physicalism than counterparts in the West, and Muslims might do too. I said look at any summary of current work, and would be interested to hear why you think all scholarly summaries exclude your alleged hordes of modern Eastern philosophers who would tip the scales against physicalism, as if there’s a conspiracy to exclude them all from bookshops and keep them off the Internet.
