Leif converted and was tasked by King Olaf, the Catholic king of Norway, with the mission of introducing Christ to Greenland.

“After staying the winter on the coast of North America, he returned to his family estate in Greenland where he preached the Faith and converted many, including his mother Thjóðhildr who built a church called Thjóðhild’s Church. That Church was the first built on the North American continent.”

Greenland is an island off the Canadian coast.
Leif Erikson lived around the year 1000.

Yeap, pretty awesome. Unfortunately, they Catholics of Greenland long died off before the rest of Europe discovered the rest of the American Continents. However, they have found ancient ruins of Catholic Churches in Greenland from long ago.

The first people to reach North America were the people that became the indigenous people of North America. They likely crossed a land bridge across what is now the Bering Strait some time between 11,000 and 8,000 BCE.

If the title were changed to say the first outsider to reach North America was Lief Erikson in 1000 CE, then it would be accurate.

Even more accurate to say he was the first European to reach North America.

…regarding the First Nations, some would argue they’ve been here a lot longer than that. Monte Verde anyone? Of course there are proposals that suggest more than one migration to the Americas… I’m reading a book on the topic right now.

Actually, there is evidence that the “indigenous people” we call “Indians” killed off the group that was already here 😱😲

The “mound builders”, aside from leaving mounds, had a head shape distinguishable from “Indians”.

And that’s about all I remember on the topic . . .

(and I edit the topic)
