In the year 1531 a newly-converted Aztec Indian laborer saw the Virgin Mary on a hill by Mexico City. Then an image of the Virgin Mary appeared on his garment miraculously. This garment and the image on it is still on display, showing no age, in the great Catholic shrine of Guadalupe built where Mary had appeared. After the Virgin Mary appeared then, the pagan Aztec Indians, 10 million of them, before generally indifferent to the Catholic faith, converted en masse in one of the great conversion events in the history of Catholicism.
