A conflict with the king of England over the rights of the Church in England led to the murder of Thomas Becket, Catholic Archbishop of Canterbury, in 1170. He was murdered by four followers of the king, who killed him before the altar of his cathedral while he was saying mass. Throughout Europe Catholic quickly began venerating him as a martyr. He was canonized two years after he was murdered. This was a major event in the history of Catholicism in England.
