Padre Pio, a Franciscan priest and friar who died in 1968, was officially declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 2002.
Saint Francis of Assisi was the first person to receive the stigmata, the same wounds on his feet, hands, and on the side of his body, that Christ received on the cross. This account tells of the remarkable event when Padre Pio also received the stigmata. His prayer that they become invisible was granted for a few years, but then they became visible. He would have the stigmata for 50 years, until right before he died. There was no question he had these wounds on his body, since they could be seen.
