Saint Oliver Plunkett was sent to Ireland in 1670 as its head bishop. But not to a life of honor, for it was a time or horrendous persecution at the hands of Protestant overlords. He served his people for 11 years with religious fervor, but when persecution was renewed, his letters show his determination not to abandon his people. At the end. he was given a show trial after being captured, and then executed in a dreadful way. Then, before his execution, he publicly forgave those responsible for his death.
