Because God does not interfere with our free will, and bad people use that free will to exploit and abuse others.

@TheLittleLady, I believe that your answer is correct. But I did not hear Pope Francis say anything close to that in his answer.

No offense to the Holy Father, but he said a whole lot of sentimental nothings. Kinda dissapointed here. He had an opportunity for real catechesis.

Actually , I remember this moment, and pope Francis (with all respect), seemed to be caught a bit of guard here , almost as if somebody from the organisation could have prevented it from happening , (I am just given a personal view of the situation )

With all respect to our Lord when I make the following statement. What kind of father allows his children to fall into such atrocity? If knew my children’s fate would befall them this evening, I would ground them at home even if it meant imposing on their free will to prevent such evil.

God forgive me…

The Pope chose to make a compassionate and emotional response rather than making a theological point.
Obviously he felt that his response was better suited to his audience than the theological catechesis.
And I think he was very likely using pretty good judgment in making that choice.

The answer about “bad things happen to children because men have free will and some men are evil” is an unsatisfying one for many of the relatively un-poor and well-educated people who read this forum. It would be even less well suited to an audience of people who are largely poor and are not seeing life through an apologetics book lens.

Except…God doesn’t allow it.
We are strictly forbidden by God to have sex with anybody but our spouse.
The question is “why do people decide to buy the services of a child, and what are the bystanders doing about it?”

Before going and asking God why, I think I would start by saying why is the government not doing something about this?

How can society (specially those wealthy) do not do anything about this? It is truly barbaric what is happening in the Philippines.

Severe income inequity is always the result of becoming too self-centered and with a mentality of only looking out for ourselves.

Prostitution is illegal in the Philippines.

Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2003 is law in the Philippines.

Seems that the government is “doing something”, as are many other governments. The government can only do so much, the rest has to come from the people. Changing hearts and minds, providing education and jobs, making the society at large one that will not provide customers for trafficking.

I agree with you that this is not a one sided issue. However it seems the government is very poorly enforcing those laws. Prostitution is rampant even among children.

Corruption among government is a big issue among many under developed countries.

It will require the combined efforts from both society and government.

The answer is that the people asking such questions wouldn’t like the solution they are asking God to implement: Judgment Day. Sure, they themselves may be ready, but many of their loved ones aren’t.

Your link says that about 80 percent of the Philippines’ 100 million people are Catholics. With such a large majority, what more could the church do?

He could have simply said, “There are very evil men in this world that have free will, but we must focus on God, because God is the infinite good. If God is infinitely good, then all evil has no chance of defeating him.” Sentimental and theological.

Actually, the more I learn about offering up my sufferrings to Christ, the more I understand the popes answer. A 12 year old girl asked him a question most adults couldn’t understand the answer to. Not an easy thing to come up with a good answer on the spot in front of a crowd.

Not to mention, the Pope is only infallible in matters of faith and morals. The church never taught he was gifted with compassion

Sure, he could have said that, with a lot of three dollar words. Or he could have said what he said.

Monday-morning quarterbacking the Pope seems to be so popular on this forum. When people who want to correct the Pope get to be Pope, they can say what they want. Most of them have not even taken the initial steps down any sort of path to Popehood, including but not limited to priesthood and celibacy. So to me it’s mostly a lot of empty chatter.

I believe there are ways he could have addressed her question that were age appropriate. In my view, he did not really answer her question. I am not pope bashing btw. My original comment and this one is that I think at the end of it all, her question was unanswered for her.
