I was just wondering if people were aware of Opus Bono Sacerdotii.

opusbono.org/obsnews/WorkfortheGoodofthePriesthood.asp

Guilt or innocence doesn’t matter here - the organization is concerned with ensuring priests get the same treatment any American would get if they stand accused. Many priests are treated as guilty until proven innocent and in some cases accusations were proven false. In either event, the organization strives to help priests with spiritual direction. Even a guilty priest needs a chance at redemption and the network works at this as well. But, they don’t judge the person.

Here is a typical process any priest accused may go through and compare that to the bishop who was accused in this article.

opusbono.org/articles/bishops_double_standard.asp

This article from the site discusses vulnerability. While there are those accused who in fact are guilty, there are some who stand accused by a person with other motives. Some priests have been vindicated with the help of this organization in such cases.

opusbono.org/articles/the_vulnerable_priest.asp

Here is the home page. Read through some of the material here and be aware of it in case you know of a priest who stands accused and is need of legal help or spiritual direction.

Also consider adopting a priest spiritually - click on the link in my sig below for details.

Thank you so much for the information. I was not aware of this organization and had wondered why there was not something like this to help support and defend our priests.

The Church is being persecuted in so many ways these days that we certainly need to be proactive in helping our priests.
The devil surely enjoys seeing the “world” discredit and scandalize our priests. And the world is falling right into the hands of the devil by doing the devil’s work!

God help us and our holy priests. :gopray2:

Agreed. While some priests have strayed and are guilty of terrible sins against innocent children, there are also many who stand accused and are themselves the victims of someone else’s sinfulness.

What I like about this organization is that it does not limit itself to ministering to potentially innocent priests, but that it fills a vacuum where sinners are involved in crimes so repulsive that even the best of Catholics forget that God loves even them and will show mercy if they repent and ask forgiveness. These people are in greater need of spiritual direction than the average person in order to secure their salvation.

Any Catholic who wishes for such people to “go to hell” is playing Judge and Jury and that is the job of the Lord.

When we peel away the layers of complexity (emotion, human laws, etc.) we cannot escape the basic obligations we have as Christians - to strive for holiness and to help others strive or it, no matter how far they have fallen.

Opus Bono has links to questionable sources which should be corrected so as not to mislead. .

America magazine prints articles that are contrary to Church teachings.

One link refers Fr Thomas Doyle who campaigns to take Church authority away for the Bishops and place it in the hands of the laity. This is contrary to the teachings of Jesus. Fr Doyle is using the plight of the victims to mask his heretical goals.

If you hit the “LINKS” button, America Magazine is not listed. The only place I could find it was in the “OBS in the News” and it was this here (let me know if this is what you spotted).

The following is a rebuttal by Joseph Maher of Opus Bono Sacerdotii to what was in America Magazine and it was featured in the Letters to the Editor of that magazine. I think Joe did a good job in responding. The section of the web-page is dedicated to OBS in the News.

In a recent issue of America, Archbishop Harry Flynn of St. Paul and Minneapolis reviewed the accomplishments of the* Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People *(10/18). While there is much to praise in his article, I would respectfully but emphatically disagree with two arguments he made…
(See the rest of the article at Opus Bono by selecting OBS in the News in the LH side bar or hitting this link opusbono.org/obsnews/TrustandConfidence.asp).

Please let me know if it was something else as you did mention “questionable links” (as in plural).

There couldn’t be a more orthodox group of people and one chaplain is my Pastor, Fr. Eduard Perrone opusbono.org/advisors/fr__perrone.asp
. In this link you will find audio clips from various interviews done on the subject.

Here is the complete list of sponsors which includes many well known names in the orthodox circle click here:

Thank you for being most gracious in clarifying this. You are right. The America cite popped up on the OBS in the news link.

It may have on that link that there was a reference to Fr Tom Boyle, too.

Forgive me for my paranoia. Recently a friend of mine became involved with Voice of the Faithful, a group that proclaims loyality to the Church. When i read Fr. Thomas Boyle’s speech at a Voice of the Faithful convention, I became extremely disturbed and realized not all groups who say they are Catholic are faithful to the Church and often do much damage while pretending to do good.

Thank you again for your thoughtful response.

Not a problem - easy mistake to make. 🙂

It was easy for me because there is no way my pastor would be involved in anything less than orthodox and true.

With regards to your friend’s issue, keep in mind what Pope Benedict says about the level of “trickery” out there. So many good people are lured into things unsuspectedly. With myself it came with not investigating something fully. I spent considerable time investigating Opus Bono when i first found the site and after reading many of the positions they take, I felt it was very well aligned with good, solid Catholicism. Priests can be sinners too and may be in need of help for redemption. The job of any priest is to help that person, no matter how bad the sin. Opus Bono Sacerdotii lives up to that and if you ask me, it takes guts on their part to do what they do.

Why don’t we see how many of us here on the forum will “adopt” a priest? :gopray2:

How about considering adopting a victim spiritually? Do you have a link for that?

No my day is filled with prayer as I went from only weekly mass to daily Divine Office, Mass, Rosary, and praying for a priest overnight and am still learning to juggle it all. But you can start one if you would like 😉 . Someone else here is already starting one for nuns who need prayers.

Maybe there is an organization out there that already prays for victims. I give money to many organizations, but I cannot give money to all. I have my own personal reasons for wanting and needing to pray for a priest, some of which I share below. It has nothing to do with sexual scandals. I may also point out that one can feel pain and sorrow for victims while also feeling pain and sorrow over the sinfulness of priests who would commit such acts.

As Christians we are called to hold true to Christian principles on how we treat any sinner, not to some set of principles dictated by society as to how we should think and feel about these people.

Please don’t misinterpret my post on Opus Bono Sacerdotii as being connected to Opus Sanctorum Angelorum. They are two different organizations with different missions, one unrelated to the other. I was alerted to the latter by a member here who asked me if I wanted to pray for a priest. I have had a certain level of distrust for priests (lets just say I have had a few try to teach me some really bad theology). I felt this was a good reason to pray for a priest. Mistrust is replaced with prayer for me.

So, the Adopt a Priest has nothing to do with the Opus Bono Sacerdotii, at least in a literal sense. It is the work of Opus Sanctorum Angelorum - The Work of the Holy Angels, an apostolate closely tied to the Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross (priests). The Holy Cross nuns will take your name and address and send you the name of a priest to pray for during a yearlong period.

Please click on my link below to read more about how it works. You can even pray for a priest of your choosing. Just contact them to let them know and ask them if they need to know the name or what not.

If you want one of the greatest spiritual water holes in literature, you’ll find it at Opus Angelorum. Just go to the home page and begin clicking on the “circulars” and formation icons. It is very content rich. You may need to just put your cursor over a title once you get in as it brings up a list that you can click from.

God Bless!

You are right. It would be nice to see an area where a victim could be sponsored spiritually since there is one for priests. I think the victims are just as deserving to be prayed for if not more.
If anyone has any ideas on how to do this, I would appreciate their help as I am not sure how to go about it.

I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors on this.

I just hope you are not in any way equating the “Adopt a Priest” with the Opus Bono Sacerdotii. Your statement makes it sound as if those who do adopt a priest are choosing “pedophile over victim”. There is no direct connection between Opus Bono Sacerdotii and Opus Sanctorum Angelorum other than they both happen to start with Opus (or Work).

I just so happen to have made a link making people aware of the Opus Bono Sacerdotii organization and you keep somehow correlating it to my Adopt a Priest link. I made this particular post in case someone becomes aware of a priest who stands accused. That priest can get spiritual direction and some help with legal counsel based on my understanding. In America we believe in innocence until proven guilty and for many priests, including those that were later proven innocent of the charges, they are “guilty until proven innocent” and without a penny in their pocket.

God help any priest who doesn’t provide spiritual direction to a person abused by another priest if that person seeks it. It is exactly this kind of priest that we pray for - those who need a boost to make sure they are doing their duties as they should. By praying for one priest, we help everyone that priest comes into contact with.

I sense some feathers getting ruffled here! If you are talking about good holy priests helping victims, then I certainly am on your side. Unfortunately the bad ones keep cropping up kind of like a bad nightmare. I am in total agreement that good, holy priests needs our prayers, but so do the victims. I believe the victims need prayers more than predators do. My friend committed suicide while being molested by a priest. Please keep him and all others like him in your prayers also. Thanks!

Sorry about your friend and that truly is tragic. I will pray for him and will keep abuse victims in mind. I believe the priests at Opus Bono Sacerdotii do, as well. If they are providing spiritual direction to an accused priest who confesses he had crossed the line, how could they not pray for the victim, as well? I just wanted to make sure that people weren’t equating two things that were not packaged together as it was beginning to sound. If I pray for a priest - an ordinary priest (not a predator for example), then hopefully he will be able to ride out the storms and spend more time in prayer himself. This leads him to better minister his flock and to avoid evil temptation.

There are bad apples in any profession and among the ranks of priests there are sinners. This book may shed light on why that may be so. I have it and will begin reading it soon. It sure is making me think.

I submitted a request for the name of a priest to pray for and I just received the name in the mail today! I am thrilled! 👍 Thanks for all of the information. I wouldn’t have known about the “adopt a priest” program if you hadn’t posted it here. 👋

I support any organisation that works for JUstice for priests during this mess of a scandal.
It is disgraceful that the bishops have decided to make priests the scape goats for there lousy supervision.
They have just re-approved zero tolerance for priests accused of molestation. Yet they give a pass to any bishop that helped the molester.
What organisation just punishs the accused worker and lets the supervisor off completely.
At the end of WWII the US hanged a Japanese general for the crimes committed by his troops.During the trial it was proven by the defense that the general had been uable to even contact his troops. During the times the crimes took place.
The prosecution argued, he was in charge that made him responsible. He was Hanged !
