Did Jesus liberate the people from the clutches of Ceasar?
This was the question posed by Manila Archbishop Gaudencio Rosales to his priests as he enjoined his clergy to avoid politics.
According to Rosales, the clergy should focus on ministering to the people instead of dabbling in politics “just like Jesus Christ who opted not to fight Rome and instead spent his three-year active ministry to feed the hungry, heal the sick and teach human values.”
“When Christ evangelized, he was trying to improve the state of the people. Evangelization is bringing values to men. The good news is really a message from God to change people’s mores, behavior and concepts. Jesus did not actually change politics. He taught the people to be human and freed them from greediness,” Rosales said.
Rosales said his view might have reached Malacañang, saying no one from the Palace came to him and sought his guidance.
“Zero,” he said when asked if President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo ever sought his assistance in the mid of the political turmoil confronting the Chief Executive.
He said there is no better time to convert more people to Catholic faith than now because Filipinos are in need of spiritual guidance.
“I would rather that the Church confront the issue of integral evangelization and not only on sacramental ministry. This is the issue. People are fighting for money, authority, position and influence. Poverty is near destitution. It is really an embarrassment for us,” he said.
