Ackward Situation

Last night when my friends and I got together, we were haging out and then they decided to pop in “Rocky Horror Picture Show”. I had never seen it before, but I knew it had something to do with transvestites or something. As it was playing I realized it was truly one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. Most of it I tuned out and didn’t watch since there were other things going on (computer games, converstations, ect.). It was just really ackward for me. They know I’m Catholic and they have a deep respect for that, but it just baffles me why they would choose that of all movies to watch. I felt guilty. Like I was a bad person for being in the same room as the movie…? I felt “unclean”. I went to the restroom for some private prayer where I prayed for them and me, and for forgiveness if I had done anything wrong. I just didn’t like it.

I’d say that’s a very healthy reaction that it was so appalling to you. I find it troubling that people can sit through movies like that, and some of these horror movies like Saw and find it amusing. I remember our homecoming group went to see the new release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it was absolutely disgusting. I felt the same “uncleanness” you were talking about. I’d say in the future, avoid these types of movies that glorify disgusting things (not necessarily just blood and guts, but other sinful things). There is no reason whatsoever to put those kind of thoughts and images into our mind. It’s like throwing mud and garbage onto a peice of art.

Or you could have said, with a grimace, “that’s way too gross. I’m out of here.” and leave.
Next time they’d have to choose between watching a similar movie and your company. Maybe it would improve their taste.

ugh, rocky horror. it was at a Catholic friend’s house with good Catholic parents that i first saw that movie. aside from it being sinful, it creeped me out beyond belief.

anyway, i’m older now (26) and still face this issue when friends want to see movies, because a good majority of movies are either overly violent or overly sexual. i don’t think i’ve seen a movie in the theater for over a year.

If you really want an OVER-REACTION, do it my way. I stopped seeing movies in 1990. I haven’t had a TV set since 1985. I just got BORED with all the gratuitous sex and violance. Yes, this means I have missed an ocassional “masterpiece” that even Catholics would rave about. I can make up for it when I go to some Catholic retirement home that only shows the good stuff. For now, I am a pop-culture illiterate and prefer it that way.

In the case cited, I would simply have said, “If it is not G-rated, I am not watching.” But then again, my real friends know of my attitude and would not have put me on the spot in the first place

I haven’t had a TV set since 1985.

We threw out our tv a few months ago and it is one of the best things we have ever done! The other night my husband and I played Monopoly ( dd was actually asleep!) and we have, as a family, spent more time together reading or talking or whatever…MUCH better then tv. I won’t say we never see a movie. The last movie we saw was the Nativity Story and the one before that I think was Flight 93.
