Hi,
I was told by a priest that this act of contrition is no longer in the rubrics and I should no longer say it before receiving absolution:

My God, I am heartily sorry for having offended you and I detest all of my sins because of your just punishment but most of all because they offend you my God who is deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of your grace to sin no more and avoid the near occasion of sin.

Is this true? Where can I go to verify this?

During confession you are asked to make an act of contrition. There is no reason not to use the traditional one if you wish. Since the form of the act of contrition is, as the priest noted, no longer specified (actually, it never was), it is up to the penitent to decide what act of contrition will be made. He doesn’t get to vote!

Deacon Ed,

You assume that during Confession, you will be asked to make an Act of Contrition. I went to Confession today and there was no mention of that or of any specific penance – just to “say some prayers.” Kosher?

Well, that would be up to the priest who heard your confession. It doesn’t sound completely kosher to me, however – but deacons don’t hear confessions.
