Does the act of contrition need to be said word for word for it to be efficacious? I know there are variations, but need we say one of the preexisting variations or can we compose our own?
You are free to make up your own.Does the act of contrition need to be said word for word for it to be efficacious? I know there are variations, but need we say one of the preexisting variations or can we compose our own?
I use my own, most of the time. The first part comes from one of Pope Francis’ encyclicals and the other part comes from the traditional prayer:
Lord, I have let myself be deceived;
in a thousand ways I have shunned your love,
yet here I am once more,
to renew my covenant with you.
I need you.
Save me once again, Lord,
take me once more into your redeeming embrace.
-Pope Francis (Evangelii Gaudium [3])
I firmly resolve, with the help of Your grace,
to sin no more and avoid the near occasions of sin.
Amen.
