Is there an short easy act of contrition that one can say in the confessional after the preist gives a penance?
It seems that I stumble at this point b/c I tend to forget this long one:
Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offened Thee, and I detest all of my sins because of Thy just punishments. But most of all because they offened Thee my God, who ast all good and deserving of all my love. i firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to sin no more, and to avoid the near occasions of sin. Amen

How about this: “Lod God, I’m sorry for my sins because I know they hurt you and I ask for your help in avoiding sin in the future.”

The one I say is in Latin and long, so probably not good for what you are looking for. I had the embarrasing moment in confession recently of forgetting part of the Act of Contrition and definitely was thrown for a loop, really really embarrassing.

I have one that’s been taught to me as a child. It’s kind of like the shorter version of the actual Act of Contrition. I’ve been using it for confession.

“Oh my God, I am sorry for all my sins because they displease you, who are all good and deserving of all my love. With the help of your grace, I will sin no more. Amen.”

I think the Rite gives a couple of short options, too, for example, “Oh God, be merciful to me, a sinner,” from the parable of the pharisee and the publican.

Fine, except that our sins do not hurt God.

Our sins offend God and hurt us.

We should repent of our sins not out of sympathy for God, but out of love for him and/or fear of eternal punishment.

An short act of contrition that I was taught as a child seems pretty good to me:

O my God, because you are so good, I am very sorry that I have sinned against you and by the help of your grace I will not sin again.

with love,

Simon

can you remember twoallbeefpattiesspecialsaucelettucecheesepicklesonionsonasesameseedbun?

can you remember the entire line-up & statistics of the New York Yankees for the last 50 years?

Can you remember the winners of the acadamy award for best picture for the last 50 years?

we remember what we want to remember, what we consider important, what we give effort to remembering

The way to learn a prayer is to pray it, not to try to memorize it like you would the multiplication tables. Pray an act of contrition, chosen from any Catholic prayerbook you like, pray it every morning and every evening, with sincerity and the effort to express and intend what the words connote, and you will soon know (rather than have memorized) the act of contrition.

Dear friends

This is what we say in the UK, well my part of the UK at least…

‘Oh My God, because you are so very good, I am so very sorry for having sinned against you and with the help of your grace, I will try not to sin again.’

But I do know there is a longer version of this. I’ll find it out and paste it on here.

God Bless you and much love and peace to you

Teresa
