Hi, i am recently married and I’m curious to know what kinds of catholic/liturgical/prayers traditions people have in their families. Starting a new family I am looking for ideas on how/what to pray with my wife, activities for the liturgical year things like that. What do you do or find useful?

Definitely the advent wreath! I loved this tradition growing up. We would turn off all the lights for our night prayers and say them by the light of the candles on the wreath. Starting with just 1 candle and working your way up to 4. The perceptible difference in light from the beginning to the end of Advent is a great symbol of the coming of the light of Christ at Christmas.

some information about the tradition:

Grace! Even in restaurants. Even in fast food joints. Even at picnics. Even if we are eating at a pool party and everyone is at their own blankets or tables, we stop and say grace among the 3 of us. It felt funny when we first started over 17 years ago. Now it would feel simply awkward not to.

Advent wreath - yes!

Also, when we get back from midnight Mass, we place a cupcake with a candle on the family altar, which has been cleaned of the usual stuff and replaced with the creche and a tiny icon of St. Nickolaus. On Christmas morning, we take the cupcake and light the candle, remove the baby Jesus figurine from the kitchen cupboard (stop laughing - its a safe place where we won’t forget where we stored him!) and “process” to the family altar singing Happy Birthday to Jesus. Then our son blows out the candle and lovingly places Jesus in the creche. We ALWAYS do this before we stop for breakfast or open presents. It puts Jesus first.

Family rosary, though we can’t always fit it in. But in a pinch, we light a candle on the family altar and gather to to pray a decade.

When we attend a funeral or wedding or baptism, we bring home the holy card or program or whatever and place it on the family altar to remind us to keep that person in prayer for about a month, sometimes much longer.

Those are the major ones I can think of off-hand but there’s more.

I recommend you get into the practice of saying the rosary together now, and then keep it up with the whole family.

Advent wreath is so great with little kids!

Celebrating Saint/Name days as well as birthdays. No need for another party, but maybe just a special dinner.

A ‘present for baby Jesus’ during Christmas. Used to be a new Bible story book or Saint book, when the kids got older we tried to always do some services during advent/Christmas.

Stations during Lent - every Friday either in the Church or at home with picture cards for each station. There are several good children’s versions for when kids come.

Easter baskets! Very Catholic, because most kids gave up candy/sweets for Lent. 😃
