Another way this has been placed is that God’s attributes are identical with his essence. While we can’t say what God ‘is’ (no word or concept can encompass the fullness of the mystery of God) perhaps the most accurate name we can use to try and get a glimpse of God is unconditioned Being. While God’s actual essence is no doubt as far above our concept of this as heaven is above Earth, in this Being God’s various attributes are not a ‘many’ in God but one and the same. The multiplicity comes from the way the finite human intellect strains and sees the same thing from multiple attributes or perspectives, like the same light of the sun is reflected and multiplied in a kaleidoscope into a variety of different colours. So our creaturely mind, when it tries to reach God, sees various attributes in God which are in fact all one in his Being, the nature of which we can never know in this life.

It’s apparent that I need to work my Catholic brain to catch up to this line of thinking. I took Philosophy - Logic in the Catholic Seminary and years later as a defect(ive) 😃 non-Catholic I took a Survey of Philosophy course required for graduation under a professor that loved the fact that his name meant god. I guess I need to pull out Kant, Aquinas, Augustine and whoever else. It’s been a long time since I read those heretics… oops I’m Catholic now…:rotfl:

Feel free to catechise me. I’m still getting back on line.
