I always thought this was rather harsh Could anyone throw some insight on it, I used the search, but could’nt find anything:shrug:

A Commentary on the New Testament, published by the Catholic Biblical Association, in 1942, page 378, says in part:
God’s purpose in punishing this sin so directly is partly revealed; fear served to preserve discipline and respect for the authority of the Apostles. It is not necessary to conclude that Ananias and his wife were eternally lost; they may have received the grace of repentance.

The footnote in the Saint Joseph edition of the New American Bible notes:

“The sin of Ananias and Sapphira did not consist in the withholding of part of the money but in their deception of the community. Their deaths are ascribed to a lie to the holy Spirit (3.9), i.e., they accepted the honor accorded them by the community for their generosity, but in reality they were not deserving of it.”

Jesus called Peter “son of Jonas” and it was Jonas who judged the Ninevites;

Again, Peter like Jonas has a path which includes the very gates of Hell; It is Peter, to this day – who reminds us of the path he dreaded. Jesus said to Peter himself, when you have turned (repented), strengthen your brothers.

Peter himself suffered prison, recall, and through his entry – the jail-keeper was freed from his own captivity (Good to have angelic keys, eh?). But don’t FORGET it was Peter who sent Ananias and Sophira to their immediate death.

Judas was not buried, but spilled guts and fed the animals first. He is the broken pot of Isaiah’s potter; Once he hardened, the pot is good for nothing else. But contrast that severity of image with the two people Peter witnessed against to the Holy Spirit.
The people around Peter were allowed to perform the corporal work of mercy of burying the DEAD. Hence, purgatory is possible, even for them – don’t judge hypocritically. Do you tithe!!!
