Acts 8:14-17 Baptism & The Holy Spirit

“Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, who went down and prayed for them, that they might receive the holy Spirit, for it had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Then they laid hands on them and they received the holy Spirit.”

Why didn’t these people receive the Holy Spirit when they were Baptized?

They did at Baptism, but that passage above is talking about another sacrament, Confirmation.

I thought that this scripture was referring to the way they were baptized. They were not baptized in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. They were only baptized in the name of Christ???

Phillipp did not have the authority to confirm them in the Holy Spirit. This is why he called Peter and John. This is one of our references for bishops confirming.

In baptism they did receive the graces of the Holy Spirit, but at confirmation they received the gifts of the spirit…

They used the term “Baptized in the name of Christ” several times. This means with the authority of Christ, and hence it was done according to Christ’s instructions.

Hence, baptizing in the name of Christ is “in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit”.

Early on people recieved the sacraments of baptism, confirmation, and the Eucharist in the same celebration. As Christian communities began to mulitply rapidly, the bishops could no longer preside over every cerimony. To stay personally involved in the initiation of each Christian, the bishops reserved to themselves the celebration of Confirmation. Thus, it became detached from Baptism and was celebrated when the bishop was available.

Can you please elaborate on the difference between receiving the graces and receiving the gifts? I understand the connection with confirmation, but I’m having trouble understanding why “the holy Spirit…had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had only been baptized…”

It clearly says that the Holy Spirit had not fallen on baptized people. What does that mean, and how would you explain it to a Fundamentalist?
