I have posted about this before because I wanted to see if there was a Ad Orientum Novus Ordo in the Washington D.C. area, but I don’t think that there is. Now I am wondering if there is a Catholic Church anywhere that regularly celebrates the Novus Ordo with the Priest facing east. I have heard that Fr. Michael Rodriguez in Texas celebrates the Novus Ordo this way, and that he requires the people assisting at Mass to receive at the altar rail on the tongue. Is there a Catholic Church anywhere that celebrates Mass like this?

Since you are asking about Texas…in the Diocese of Brownsville in South Texas.

Fr. Greg Labus at Our Lady of Mercy in Mercedes does it occasionally. He also has his altar set up in the Benedict XVI style (three candles and a crucifix) when he says mass facing the people.

The Oratorian Fathers at St. Jude Thaddeus in Pharr–at last I heard–say Mass ad orientem. They have the Mass in EF (with sermon and readings in English), OF Latin, OF English, OF Spanish and an extremely reverent LifeTeen OF. They’re kind of amazing in how much ground they cover.

Whats a lifeteen OF?

I attended a Mass in Illinois once and the priest did it this way.

I wish there were more priests who celebrated Mass this way. Unfortunately, the parish I usually attend is arranged so that the altar is in the center of the nave, thus it wouldn’t make any difference. I suppose I could just sit on the side facing the celebrant’s back. LOL

St. John Cantius In Chicago has an OF form in English and Latin and the EF as well. My DH and I were there about 1.5 yrs ago and we went to the OF Latin Mass and it was said ad orientem with incense, chant, and use of the communion rail…beautiful! I wish my diocese offered this but they do have the EF regularly.

It is a troubling to think about what has happened to Fr. Rodriguez and his past parish in the past few months… I pray the Bishop reconsiders removing Father.

The closest on this side of the Potomac is SJN where they started using the Benedictine arrangement of the altar.
The parish in PG that entered the church and will be an Anglican Use parish has mass ad orientem from what I understand. There is a church in Baltimore that announced its intention to convert over a year ago so once that is finalized (pray God) they will also have mass ad orientem.

I did go to the Easter Vigil this year at St. John the Beloved in McLean and it was a Latin OF ad oreientem. Not certain if they celebrate that way all of the time, but you could likely find out.

I have attended Latin and English OF ad oreitnem masses at some chant conferences.

St. Veronica Parish in Chantilly, VA (near Dulles Airport) has an 11am Sunday Mass which is the Ordinary Form, but Ad Orientum and with the ordinary in Latin. Booklets are provided for folks unfamiliar with the Mass in Latin to follow along.

Kneelers are provided at the Mass for people to receive on the tongue while kneeling if they wish, but it is not required. People may recieve either on the tongue or in the hand per US norms, though Fr. Hathaway does occasionally encourage people to receive on the tongue when speaking about the Eucharist in his homilies.

The other weekday and Sunday Masses are in English and not Ad Orientum. The 11am Sunday Mass is set apart as a kind of ‘high Mass.’

God bless you!

From what I understand, Bishop Slattery of Tulsa, OK does an OF ad orientem

And lay off of Lifeteen folks, I know it goes overboard often, but it can be done reverently…

Church of St. Agnes, St. Paul Minnesota celebrates its OF this way.

I think it’s totally safe to judge a program (and Mass) based off of a youtube video or two. Just like I’m sure I can judge the entire traditionalist movement off of those SSPX folks who set up shop in the Philippines without the consent of the local Bishop, or judge it based on any of the scandals that happened pre-1962.

“Life Teen Masses” aren’t any different than any OF Mass, they simply have different music and occasionally will encourage kids to sit in the first few pews.

Have there been questionable practices? Sure, you can probably find some on Youtube. Of course, the lack of Youtube on abuses pre-1962 isn’t there because mini-cameras weren’t around then. I find the assumption that there wee no abuses pre-1962 to be a laughable one.

The other funny thing is the same people who say “no screens, no technology, no anything like that” during Mass will just as easily use a Youtube clip from Mass to prove a point, which meant someone had to have had a camera in there, and possibly the whole reason they were at Mass was to video tape waiting for something bad to happen.

Life Teen is approved by Rome. You can find all about them on their website. I’ve been volunteering at a Life Teen program for eight years, and I haven’t seen anything disastrous. I have seen plenty if obedience to the Holy See, as they at on point informed Life Teen that a certain practice would have to be stopped. A communique went out quickly, and the practice was swiftly removed.

This is much better than I can say than some members and Societies within the Church who don’t listen to Rome or local ordinaries.

Right because all the clips of bad things happening at masses, are all by angry traditionalists, none of them could be of people who were videotaping for the sake of it, promotional videos (as this one clearly was), curious people, mums or dads videotaping their kids or a whole host of other reasons.

I don’t even know where you got the pre-1962 issue from 🤷 Looks like you are trying to bait people into setting the two forms of the mass against each other, which is amusing seeing as the EF has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with this thread.

The music is absolutely appaling, I cannot see how it would in any, way, shape, size or form lift the mind to God. It also appears that they are playing in the sanctuary, but I may be wrong its hard to tell. The whole concept behind lifeteen masses is frankly, speaking as a 20 year old, insulting. Its as if young people are so insulated in their own culture and so biased that they can only appreciate their type of music, they need to have special masses otherwise they might get bored or distracted and leave and they need to have a simplified mass or else they might not understand things. Young people can as a whole be particularly self-centred, something hardly helped by our society, creating a form of mass just for them hardly helps this matter and separates them in a way from the people of God. The mass is for everyone regardless of age, social background or culture, it is supposed to be universal, we do not need special masses for different people, of course there may (and I say may) be exceptions perhaps for deaf people etc… But if we go down this road whats next? Rock masses for people who like Rock music, rap masses for people who like rap music, classical masses for people who like classical music? Masses for elderly people? Middle aged masses? Masses for women and masses for men? Its divisive and lessens the mass from a sacred thing to something centered around man and his preferences and choices.

I disagree with lifeteen masses for much the same reason I disagree with masses for children, children aren’t idiots, they can grow up and appreciate a normal mass and the sense of the sacred it provides. Besides which they will never learn otherwise. St Theresa of Liseux and her siblings certainly did not a mass for young children in order to appreciate the mass.

And no this has absolutely nothing to do with the NO or the TLM, I am speaking solely about lifeteen masses and I do not intend to be conveying anything other than my own personal opinion.

And that is the last I will say on the subject so as not to derail the thread or nag people.

Every now and again, they will celebrate the 7:30 PM Mass at St Mary Mother of God (Chinatown) Ad Orietem. Particularly if Father Daniel D’Alliessi is the celebrant.
