Catholic Schools including those under ultimate influence of a Bishop do not feel the slightest inclination to teach that all life on earth originated 5778 years ago, though this is the common literalist’s conclusion from the Bible. I know of know Vatican documents that direct schools to teach this historical interpretation of the Early parts of the Bible.
 
No, this is an age that was computer by Ussher. (who was not a Catholic) There are issues with it. He could be off significantly, but not 13 billion years. The Bible makes no mention of the age of the earth.

We are left with science to try to come up with its best estimate. Estimates though are based on assumptions and the current dating is not empirically provable.

That is vehemently denied by the literalist readers of genesis who place the “six days” of creation 5778 years ago (and argue that while the earth may have preexisted at that time point, the sun did not…). Here is one:

No it isn’t. It is derived from using the dates in the geneaologies.
 
Seriously? This article gets it wrong in just the first 4 words: “A recent archaeological discovery…”
