Like the title says. What say all of you to this.

Were Adam and Eve actually people?

Or were they just names given to no real people and merely meant to symbolize the history of the world and falling from grace that man did?
Adam and Eve are the sole parents of the human species. They are an essential element in Christianity.

Blessings,
granny

All human life is worthy of profound respect from the moment of conception.

I am sure that this will meet with some…um…disapproval from someone. However, take into account that that Catholic Church teaches that Adam and Eve were our first parents, they do not however say that BAM one day God made a man, and a woman.

I believe in Creationism and Evolution.

Let me explain:

The world is millions of years old. I don’t believe that science in wrong in that fact. I believe are to smart now a days, and thus we know this about our planet. I do not believe that God made the earth in 6 days, and then rested on the 7th. I speak of 7 24 hour days. Why in God’s green earth would God work on our time? Who is to say that one of God’s days is not a million years, or however long.

So, big bang happens. Small creatures finally crawl out of the ooze eventually. Million or so years later, we have apes. Apes evolve into neanderthals wow think I spelled that right. Science has proof, basically anyway, of the stages humankind has gone through.

Eventually, after “6 days”, or millions of years, God sees that the earth is ready. There are animals that are becoming smarter, more self aware. God infuses them with a soul.

The first “self aware” animals were Adam and Eve. Do I believe they were actually just two animals that God granted a soul and intelligent thought? Nope, I believe there were quite a few that God allowed to begin to think for themselves. To form thoughts, to become “self aware”, so to speak.

Thus man was born, along with his “helper” woman.

I mean, if Adam and Eve were really the ONLY two humans to begin with…think of the incest that occurred. Did the Bible even speak about them having a daughter? Wasn’t it merely two sons that they had?

God doesn’t work on our time, and I am sure when I get to meet the big guy, him willing, I will be wrong about many things. However, if…if I ever make it to heaven, I don’t think I will give a crud how man was formed. I just will hope God has a beer ready for me. 🙂

gave up drinking two years ago, I surely like to think Heaven has a bar

Actually, the Church teaches that Adam and Eve were two people that were our first parents, not a group of people. They do not teach that these two people were necessarily created instantaneously or over time via evolution, but in your theory, only two would have been infused with a soul and only two would have been humans.

You can read this article to help clarify.

God Bless.

Thanks, as I always say, I could be wrong. 🙂

Thank you for correcting me, I do stand corrected in the fact that we came from just two people, not a pool of them. 🙂 this is a sincere thank you, not a sarcastic one that is often seen here

Not a problem. That is the purpose of these forums after all, to edify and understand the Christian faith.

I have been corrected on several occasions and it is difficult to humble oneself to admit correction was required.

God Bless.

I have -no- trouble admitting my errors. At least not when it comes to a faith as complex as Catholicism. I have been unemployed for almost a year now, I used to get mad at God and question his motives for allowing it to happen. I got something I never had before from it…humbleness.

Well if Adam and Eve never existed, than so did not exist Cain and Abel and all that followed in between, until such a time when its there in the recorded history.

Maybe I’m slow but didn’t Jesus refer to Adam and Eve, and didn’t Matthew give a direct lineage, and didn’t Mark give a direct lineage? It seems to me that if we reject the beliefs of the apostles themselves let alone what Jesus endorsed (and He should know) why don’t we all just take our Bibles and throw them in the trash. What freedom we would have to conjecture about nearly everything.

I urge you to read what the Church teaches, even I have learned something on this subject that I started.

If you really believe there was a Dude named Adam, and his woman named Eve…I don’t know what to say.

They were names simply given to the first parents. The first humans that were granted a soul.

I am not blasting you btw, just saying you should read what the Church teaches, and what is left for interpretation by ourselves.

He named them? He said there was a guy named Adam and a woman named Eve? I don’t think so. Perhaps he spoke of the first humans/parents of mankind. That is believable.

Maybe Adam had a name tag that was later found by Moses when he penned the first books in the OT.

Give me that time lineage if you can to man. I would be interested to see when a woman besides Eve was actually born.

I don’t think that I connected the words time and linneage together, the Bible doesn’t do that in the NT, it does however do that in the OT, but that isn’t my point. My point is this. Where do we stop deciding that it was just allegory and start believing that it actually happened. Jesus could just as easily be fiction as Adam if we take that stance.

So you take the entire bible completely literal? Serious question to find out.

I believe that the Bible is the inspired word of God. I also believe that God would have told somebody that he was joking when he wrote certain parts of it. It is clear that the NT writers believed that the OT was literal. Why shouldn’t I?

Because it has symbolic things in it as well, it is not meant to be taken literally the entire way.

It’s an age old debate that I grow ever so tired of, so I will leave it alone in this thread I started. Thanks for responding, I want to simply see what others believe, and I got myself roped into actually replying to things I see as error.

Mainly wanted to know what the Catholics here believed. I was pretty sure that most non-Catholic Christians held firm that there was a dude with a name tag saying Adam on it.

Just like Jonah got swallowed by that whale. 😉

You should read John 17 where Jesus refers to himself and to the word (that would be the OT scriptures) as truth. Obviously there are prophetic elements to the Bible like Isaiah, Daniel, and Revelation but all of the references that the NT writers make to the OT stories view them in a literal sense. The greatest and most difficult miracle that God ever performed is saving the human soul. If He can do that I think he can stuff Jonah in a fish.

I should at least tell you welcome to the forums I suppose though. 😃 I see you just signed up, so welcome.

Forgive me lack of desire to debate, I am here to help represent the Catholic faith, and her teachings, which are the teachings of Christ as we believe it.

I hope you are not a Catholic basher, even if you are, not accusing you of it, welcome to the forums. 🙂
