. . . about having a relationship with God? I’d like to have one. But hard to do so when he won’t talk to me. Prayer is not supposed to be a monologue, but a conversation . . .
It sounds like you know hard times.
Things have not been so good for me;
if I may ask you for your prayers.
I believe He will listen to you.
Thanks

I have to be perfect. God requires it.

[BIBLEDRB]Matthew 5:48[/BIBLEDRB]

This is not a compulsion. This is a command from the Lord.
He doesn’t merely require it; He enables it. In, fact, He’s the only authentic -and only possible -path to perfection for man.

Then please read the entire chapter 5 of the Gospel of Matthew.

This chapter is called the Sermon on the Mount. It teaches humans the ways one can imitate the perfection of our heavenly Father. Humans are to work toward that perfection.

Please, do not assume that Jesus is unaware of human nature. Do not skip verses 43-45. Do notice that Jesus wants humans to be children of the heavenly Father. We are to act without complaining about the fact that we are creatures. We are not God, the Creator; we are human.

God’s perfection is that He does not throw away His Divine Nature. Do we have a Divine Nature? Of course not. Can humans have a perfect Divine Nature? Of course not. But we can seek to perfect our very own human nature as in Matthew 5:48.

The goal for humans to be perfect as our heavenly Father Who is God is the goal of sharing in God’s life here on earth and eventually in heaven.

Sharing in God’s Divine Life is the perfection of human life. The Catholic Church gives us the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. What is Holy Communion if it is not sharing in God’s perfect life? Please read chapter 6 in the Gospel of John.

Humans do not make themselves gods in order to be perfect–even though some humans do try to be a god knowing better than our Creator. Should humans skip the whole chapter 5 of the Gospel of Matthew just because they are not yet perfect? Of course not. The command to be perfect is to be perfected by living a God-like life as described in the Sermon on the Mount.

Why should humans close their ears to this powerful sermon just because they are on earth and not perfected in heaven?

What about the saints who were tortured to death? Is their existence a reason for describing God as the Great Developer in the Sky who writes buggy programs and then punishes them for crashing? Of course not.

And what is meant by quality software? Humans definitely have quality. The Catholic Church, not some mega company, teaches that a human person, not some software program, is loved by God the Creator – a Real Creator Who is extremely different from some kind of Great Developer in the Sky.

Perhaps, it would be best to skip the failed symbolism and start over with a realistic view of humans, sinners and saints. Humans are called to eternal joy as they share in God’s life on earth and in heaven. Being in the image of God, the human being possess the dignity of a person, who is not just something, but someone.

Jesus hung bleeding on a cross for each and every human person, you and me.
If we are are getting to the idea of hardware and software…

Humans are not buggy software.

They are microcomputers infected with a wicked virus!

If we are are getting to the idea of hardware and software…

Humans are not buggy software.

They are microcomputers infected with a wicked virus!
And you will notice that God either did not write an anti-virus or wrote one that was buggy that allowed this virus to get in.

Thus the software was buggy.

The analogy stands.

Right. But if I don’t have this ability to be perfect, then I cannot be perfect. I can only be perfect if God gives me the ability to do that.

I do not suffer quietly with a big smile on my face like God expects us to do (be masochists) - that is why I am a big disappointment to God.

He doesn’t merely require it; He enables it. In, fact, He’s the only authentic -and only possible -path to perfection for man.
Then why hasn’t he enabled it for me? I’m waaaaaaaaaaaaay imperfect here. I hate being imperfect. I hate being a disappointment to God. I hate my defects and worthlessness.

My friend, Bob, you are too hung up on the intricacies of the faith without first placing all your trust in the love of Christ. I, too, have done this, and it is no way to live. I focused so much on rules and hell, that my faith became more of a legal code and theory, and less of the loving relationship with Christ that it should be.

Ask the Lord for faith, for complete abandonment of yourself in His love and mercy. Ask Him to give you understanding of how much He loves you. He delights in you, my friend. You are His handiwork, His creation, His beloved adopted son, with whom He is pleased. It took a wonderful spiritual director to point this out to me, because I had been so blind to it before, and this is exactly what Satan wants: for us to despair in our sins and imperfections.

But the Lord has promised that, if we place our trust in Him, we will be made holy. It will be on God’s time, though, and not our own. So do not despair and think that God does not delight in you. He does, He loves you more than you could possibly know.

Simply ask Him for faith and to know Him and love Him above all else, and for the grace to abide in Him. Do not despair at imperfection. He will grant you these things, though in His own way, in His own time. Be at peace, and rest in the love of Christ.

Try hating your analogy which digs a hole for you. 😉

Try going to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which recalls Christ hanging bleeding on a cross especially for you as you are today.

Try not to substitute your definition of “perfect” for God’s love for you. Try to avoid the blindness of software. So what if you think you are a black sheep–Jesus Christ is the Good Shepherd Who carries the black sheep close to His heart.

If I do this can I get my suffering eliminated? Can I go directly to heaven?
Ask Him to give you understanding of how much He loves you.
He won’t give me understanding of why we’re punished for Adam’s sin. How is that loving?

Why won’t he talk to me? How is that loving?
He delights in you, my friend. You are His handiwork, His creation, His beloved adopted son, with whom He is pleased.
If I was, why am I being punished? God only punishes those who he is displeased with.

We can only hope that someday we will go straight there!🙂 But suffering is promised to followers of Christ: He Himself lived a life of complete poverty, He was persecuted and hated by many, and was tortured and put to death. The Apostles likewise suffered similar agony on His behalf, as have most (if not all) of the saints.

We are guaranteed the walk to Calvary and crucified, my friend, just as the two theives. We will all suffer. One of the thieves was crucified in his sin. The other thief cried out to Jesus, and was crucified in Him. So, too, must we seek to be crucified in Him.
He won’t give me understanding of why we’re punished for Adam’s sin. How is that loving?

I, too have struggled with desolation and difficulty over the problem of suffering and sin. A priest explained to me that we inherit our human nature from our parents. The Original Sin separated Adam and Eve from God. It was a natural result of the action Adam chose: to reject God, with full knowledge of the error of his action, and in a state of grace (we like to think of Adam as a childlike idiot; this was not so. His state of grace and freedom from concupiscence guaranteed he sinned fully aware of the error of the decision). He committed the first mortal sin, and it brought death into the world.

This sin became a part of Human Nature. We are afflicted by it because of our father Adam, not Our Father in Heaven.

As for desolation in prayer, ask Him. Ask Him for peace, ask Him for joy that cannot be destroyed. Ask Him for faith and hope. Ask Him to be perfected. Ask Him to reveal His love for you in a way that you may clearly see. Keep asking, my friend. I know it is difficult.
If I was, why am I being punished? God only punishes those who he is displeased with.
Suffering is often given to friends of God. As suffering and death became a means to our vindication in Christ, so have they become a means to our perfection here on this earth, and an offering to be unified with Christ’s perfect sacrifice. He is not displeased with you; He loves you more than you know. Ask Him to relieve your suffering, and if it is not possible, ask Him to help you bear it with joy.

My brother in Christ, I have been to the depths of great despair and depression. I have felt unloved and unwanted, and I have, and still do, struggle with sin and the mysteries of God’s love. And, though I pray I do not, I may fall into these lies again. But we must remember that they are just that: lies from pits of Hell. You must not surrender. Continue in Christ, and offer to Him all that you can. Offer it up for peace and joy, for relief, for strength, and for holiness. Ask Him to reveal His love to you. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in prayer, and the Blessed Mother to intercede for you and ease your suffering.

*(Additionally, if you suffer from depression, I would recommend seeking professional help, as I had this problem and medication has helped tremendously, though not as much as Jesus;))

Seek a good confessor/spiritual director, continue to pray to God and receive the Sacraments, and place your trust in Him. You are in my prayers!

But suffering is promised to followers of Christ:
It is the only thing promised for those on earth, for temporal things.
This sin became a part of Human Nature. We are afflicted by it because of our father Adam, not Our Father in Heaven.
But God refuses to heal this “affliction” because he holds us responsible temporally for Adam’s sin.
I’ll try. Right now prayer is a monologue, and not a conversation. So I pray for the souls in purgatory. Even if God is silent, I still know I did something good.
Suffering is often given to friends of God.
And enemies of God too. That’s why I can’t tell if I’m his friend or his enemy. I must be the latter, and not the former, since I have the complete inability to suffer with a smile on my face.
Continue in Christ, and offer to Him all that you can.
I am afraid to offer it up to Jesus.

I do it, yes, but I’m afraid that God will get a message that says “dump more horrible stuff on me since I’ll just offer it up”
*(Additionally, if you suffer from depression, I would recommend seeking professional help, as I had this problem and medication has helped tremendously, though not as much as Jesus;))
I only get like this when out of work. I saw a specialist who saw that a diagnosis of depression is not appropriate.
Seek a good confessor/spiritual director,
There is none. I live in a desert of CINO churches.
continue to pray to God and receive the Sacraments, and place your trust in Him. You are in my prayers!
I will continue to pray (monologue) and receive the sacraments. I trust in God for all spiritual needs, while I don’t have that trust in temporal needs in one area (employment). I appreciate your prayers.
