Wha’ts the Church’s position on Adam and Eve? Because if they were the first two humans, wouldn’t incest be required to populate the earth? I’m rather certain that the Church doesn’t support incest, so what’s the deal with Adam and Eve?

We are lookin g at Adam and Eve prior to sin entering the equation. Incest is a sin post the fall and sin.
I suspect God had something different in mind rgarding sexuality, before the fall, and incest, sexual abuse, adultry, fornication, are effects following wounded sexuality.
I dont believe we can ever know the type of sexuality had envisaged for us before the Fall. It is one of the things I would like to ask about if I ever merit heaven.

There was a necessity for incest among Adam and Eve’s children, as well as Noah’s.

Incest was not declared a sin until after the need for incest went away.

I’m not a Biblical scholar but I seem to remember something about Cain telling God that the others would kill him and so God gave him the now infamous “Mark of Cain” “The others” would sugget an entire world of God’s other creations which the Bible tells nothing about. But after expulsion from the garden it might not have mattered if Cain marrired one of these others, so incest might not have been neccessary. I can’t even speculate on Noahs experience though.

It still seems a little gross, though. But that is a taboo, which I’m sure hasn’t existed for all eternity.

I know that some Protestants take the Bible literally. I’ve heard some Catholics state that this is a one example how the Bible in a literal sense would seem to contradict itself. The Biblical scholars and such take into account so many factors, such as the time period.

What other passages in the Bible contradict other passages?

There is no contradiction here. The Bible is the inerrant Word of God and all such ‘contradictions’ are pointed out in ignorance or because the matter is a complicated one requiring knowledge of history and other matters or simply because some things do not translate well into English. Apologists have dealt with them all for years.

Adam and Eve are the first human beings created on the 6th Day by God as they are and all of humanity is descended form them. The Church also recognizes Adam and Eve as real individuals as the Bible teaches. Christ also referred to them as real people and his lineage can be traced back to them being as how Christ is the New Adam.

In a perfect world before the Fall between only Adam and Eve, incest would be the only way for the world to be populated. This can find grounds in science as today incest is taboo because of genetic problems. In paradise and for the recent ages after the Fall the genetic problems of Adam and Cain etc were either non existant or not that big a problem. However as the universe continues to age and die, genetic material also degrades and so God gave a clear commandment against incest in the time of Moses. Given that the Pentateuch would be authored by Moses which includes the Book of Genesis, Moses would downplay references to incest.

Ya, I know that the Church must take into account history, the author, translation, etc. when reading the Bible. I was saying that some Protestants take the Bible LITERALLY, like it is some sort of encyclopedia article. The Bible is very complicated and cannot be taken literally.

Of course, I don’t really understand how some of the literal Protestants don’t take the “This is my body, which shall be given up for you.” passage literally.

If you consider the Church’s teaching that we all descended from Adam and Eve you need to look at it from a different angle.

In the beginning these guys were living like 100’s of years. In that time, a guy could come across someone from 5-10 generations later that would have no clue who he was (I don’t think the “Family Reunion” was invented, yet!). These generations may have already come to past by the time that Cain decided that he didn’t need Abel around to make him look bad in front of the Lord.
